Lyon County Sheriff Bloemendaal reports the county radio system was in the process of switching to narrow-band operation on May 7, 2012. It is assumed this is now complete.

Bloemendaal also advised that Lyon County Sheriff Dispatch (156.210 MHz) will be switching to digital modulation (assume P25) this summer (2012).

Radioboy75,

Which channels actually got converted?

Another thing I would like to get cleared up in the narrow-banding is the old ops/info frequencies. Some counties have them listed, but they are not used. I also understand some counties are still using them in one form or another. Maybe we could come up with a list?

Tim -- how can I know that? I guess I could ask the Sheriff but I'm not sure he would know. I'm guessing the ones that actually get used. But I would have no way of knowing except asking the Sheriff and I'm not positive he knows either. Or is that info available in the license?

I can clear up the use/non use thing for you. But I believe they are still licensed for the old frequencies even though they don't use them.

I understand that due to auto-load and scanners like the HomePatrol, you don't want them scanning frequencies that aren't in use.

On the other hand, can we put them somewhere that people would be able to get at them? I just fear that they'll go back under "unidentified" which isn't true. We know what they were, and are likely to be called if they come out of retirement. How can we tell people that the license continues to be active, but there hasn't been any traffic on it for several years? I see what is meant by "unidentified" but I still think that's not exactly true . . .

In Lyon County, the Ops and Info freqs are not used at the present time. That would be:

155.19000 KAB296 BM Lyon Sh Ops Sheriff Old Dispatch FM Law Tac
155.61000 KAB296 B Lyon Info B Sheriff Information - Base FM Law Talk
155.91000 KAB296 M Lyon Info M Sheriff Information - Mobiles FM Law Talk

The county is actually also still licensed for the old low-band frequencies from the 1970's as well, but I have NEVER heard anything on those (I started scanning in 1991). Not sure the county still owns any radios that would operate there. That would be:

37.1 KAB296 BM Main Dispatch
37.2 KAB296 BM Channel 2

(not sure on the names here, this was before my time, but I'm lead to believe 37.1 was the main fq and 37.2 was car-car or a secondary fq)

I changed the 3 frequencies to deprecated. It still lists them in the DB as well. I changed everything to NB as well. We can only assume they did the whole county at once.
