I need to upgrade the latest firmware. I went to the correct website and downloaded it and got this. Sorry it's small it says Windows cannot open this file:
File: BCD996T_V1_04_12.scn

I have tried on my laptop and got the same results. Am I doing something wrong or does Uniden have a dead link?

From your comment, it appears that you have downloaded the firmware file (that's the file with the *.scn extension), but are trying to open it with Windows. That's not an executable file.

You also need to download & install the firmware loading program, BC_VUP. That link is on the same firmware page that wtp provided. Unzip and install it, then run it following all the steps on the firmware page. The VUP program will ask what file you want to load, which is the firmware file itself, BCD996T_V1_04_12.scn. Note that both the firmware and VUP loader files are downloaded as zipped (compressed) files. You must extract the contents of each before you can proceed (the VUP program must be installed; the *.scn file is the one that the VUP will load to your scanner).

I hit "Extract all" and it still loads blank

Downloaded and the file is there , don't know what your clicking on or so but the file is there. Direct link is http://info.uniden.com/twiki/pub/UnidenMan4/BCD996TFirmwareUpdate/BCD996T_V3_02_00.zip

You must follow the directions and use the updater program that uses the above file. The file above does not work on its own it is used by the updater program.

My step by step

1. I download it.

2. I hit Extract All

3. It opens blank.

I'm using WINRAR i've also tried other zip programs with the same results.

Follow the steps on the firmware page exactly as written. It still sounds as if you are trying to run the *.scn file. You have to first install BC_VUP, then run that program to install the fireware file in the scanner.

Need Help again please. It tells me to turn it off then turn the scanner on and hold down the L/O & 6 at the same time. I did that and brings me to the main screen. It's connected to COM 3 as my device manager says Prolific COM 3. What am I doing wrong?

Hold down all 3 at the same time. So turn it on while holding the L/O and 6.

Are you using the front port? Think you must use the front one.

Has this cable worked previously? (there are counterfeit Prolific that do not work with all versions of Windows)

I re-titled the thread to more accurately reflect the true nature of what is occurring.
