You must live close to the Mexico-USA border. Illegal electrons are making their way into our power grid, and the 396T is smart enough to detect them.

If you are getting this message when the scanner is off, it might be a bad battery. Try a set of alkalines (make sure you move the switch) and see if the message goes away. If it does, get a new set of rechargables and try them.

If you use the wrong car ac adapter for your 396 it fries it. Their really sensitive in this matter. And there you have it, the illegal voltage displayed whenever you use your stock adapter. Now you have too take your batts out each time too recharge, until you send it in to uniden for repair. This happened too me twice with the 330t and 396

When you sent in the unit for repair, did you include the AC adapter? Illegal Voltage usually means that the adapter is not supplying adequately regulated power.

Does it give that error even if it isn't connected to AC power?

Dead 396

I have sent my 396 in twice now with the charger for the voltage problem! Got it back still has same problem. Called them and they said cant fix it! So I have a two year old 500 dollar scanner that tells me the voltage is wrong! Not to happy!
