A couple things:
***X was around for the BC235XLT & BC245XLT. I don't think the X meant anything.
***Whatever it is, it needs a market...Something people in growing digital markets may want, or on the flip side, something for those left out of a digital market.
***Perhaps a NEW scanner that has features a current scanner owner can get via the upgrades as opposed to buying a new unit.
***Perhaps a larger case (Which I hope it is not)
***A "smart Uniden" would want something that will keep making money.....buying additional accessories. Look at the Apple iPod store. You can go crazy in there if you aren't careful. Accessories lined up and ready to buy would translate into more $$$ on an ongoing basis.
***NAC, better multi-path/simulcast receive and decode, colors in display that can be changed or LED stuff like the GRE500, but PLEASE UPMan....better audio, louder volume variance. Let me program it to lose my hearing if I want to. But, I am sure the deal is already sealed and just waiting for the press release and FCC stuff.
So many theories and possibilities. I just hope this isn't a dud firecracker like all this ESN..checksum madness.

Why make a new scanner? Many scanner users brought this scanner because it was small and could be updated with new features. What happened to pay upgrade that they (uniden) mention in the last update. Will the BCD396T be gone for ever, after the new scanner comes out. I hope uniden keeps its promise of updating the scanner.

A long time friend in the hobby and I were talking...He mentioned maybe the new scanner will handle the rebanding right out of the box, as well. Another possibility.

But, I think it is a fair question: What about the ESN checksum stuff and the 'upgrades', paid or otherwise???????

Well, if you can wait that long (release of a new model is a way's off...tell you more next month (then more the month after that (then some more after that...))).

I don't feel like waiting that long... Can you tell us now?

I am glad I found this forum the other day. I was about to buy a 396t but now I guess I have to wait.

You may be right on!

No new FCC approvals makes me think this WILL be the pay for upgrades feature.

If I recall corectly, the FCC stuff wasn't out there when the infamous pics of the 396 and an array of other new Uniden offerings was *accidentally* released before the original announcement by UPMan. Remember that Paul?.... I sure do. Some of the pics were actually prototypes and not even release models but nothing was at FCC at that point and shortly after the stuff showed up and then we had those NEW 396's in our hands. Same with the recent Pro162. The FCC stuff showed up in close time frame to the actual release.

But, you could be right. And if you are...then my question is...why the anticipated hoopla for what we were already told was a wave of the future ?....(hence the registering of our scanners with ESN's/checksums) It really is no secret so why create a buzz?.... Unless one is trying to take the thunder and buzz away from the competitor's sales power?........... Guess we'll find out in a month or so. I've gotten burned out on all this upgrade anticipation, then there was a quick fix for some and improvements I didn't see in the Chicago area except that my squelch has to be set higher on UHF conventional in high RF areas. Then the ESN checksum nonsense. I want to be excited about something but sadly, the performance never matches the excitement of the previews. I just sit back and watch people scurry over this. If it is just upgrades then why a special announcement to what we have already been told is in the works. If something is to be released...for free or for $$$ then tell us at the time of unveiling. Why say..Looky here folks! Next month we'll be revealing something. It's old already.

I wonder how they will add color options via a software upgrade? Does anyone know what type of LEDs are in the 396? My guess is that a lot of people are interested in either a color display, or color lighting which probably requires new hardware...

Not possible. The display is lit by micro blue leds. You would have to physically change them. Even if you did install multi color leds there would be the problem of driving them since there are no extra traces on the boards leading from extra logic lines from the CPU.

I think other features like NAc, temp lockout, multi-site trunking, ESK?, would be more importent then multi colour display

Although UpMans Aviator with all the colours makes me think

How about built in GPS as well as an SD card slot for on the fly digital audio recording...blue tooth for tranfering settings from one scanner to the next and or programming?!

Maybe if we are really lucky, the will include analog and digital decryption! ;)

Hmm. Interesting. What about greater control channel sensitivity so that when you're just on the fringe of a TRS (as i am of so many) it will decode that control channel.

Well if Uniden is not going to put out any more updates for the 996. I'm not going to pay 500 for a scanner. I will sell my 996 if no more updates and by a GRE. Isn't it kinda lame to send secret codes out in avatars and get everyone in a uproar and then take several months before they actually produce something. Sounds like games to me and here is GRE no games and producing updates! just my 2 cents over and out!
