Before releasing a new scanner, I would like to see them get the 800Mhz reband firmware out. I keep hearing NJ State Police units taking radios in for Rebanding, last thing I want is to be out in the cold for 6 months while Uniden gets their act together with this.

I second that !!

I dread the thought of possibly HAVING to get a new scanner (such as GRE) to monitor my local system after rebanding. I hope it can be resolved with a timely firmware release.

Maybe what's coming out on 9/29 that's part of it! :)

New Scanner.....maybe not

What about the possiblility of Uniden offering (for a fee) to swap-out the innards of your 396, giving us all of those nice features you've all been dreaming about (especially crystal clear digital decoding).Maximum turn-around time, 1 week.AM

Would be nice.. but I doubt it.
Although it would explain the reason for the "are you ready for an X-change" part.

That makes sense.

Or not.

Somewhere in this room. Right now, you're very col
Well if Uniden is not going to put out any more updates for the 996. I'm not going to pay 500 for a scanner. I will sell my 996 if no more updates and by a GRE. Isn't it kinda lame to send secret codes out in avatars and get everyone in a uproar and then take several months before they actually produce something. Sounds like games to me and here is GRE no games and producing updates! just my 2 cents over and out!

So wait...

First the gripe was "Hey GRE's putting out all these updates, and Uniden's just sitting silently, what's going on Uniden?"

So Uniden starts letting people know "Hey, we're working on something new, you'll know more in another month, stay tuned"

and the reaction here is "Hey GRE's putting out updates and Uniden's just playing around starting rumors, etc."

Come on people... have a little patience, huh? These things take time. If Uniden didn't say anything (as you suggest) then people would still be saying "Wow Uniden's just sitting around doing nothing while GRE is eating their lunch," lolcat, etc.

I'm currently in the market for a new digital, so I'm going to wait and see what Uniden comes up with. If I'm not impressed, then GRE will get the money I've been saving up. But I'd rather wait a couple months and see rather than spend $500 now only to go "aww man, the new Uniden was a much better scanner" and wish I had waited.

Let's also not forget that my old BC796, even older BC250D and freaking ANCIENT BC895 are still going strong while my GRE made PRO-96 literally fell apart after about 2 years of use. That says alot also. The GRE sounds like a great scanner, as long as it stays in the shack and never gets beat up. But Unidens are built like tanks and that's the type of scanner I need, not some fragile little flimsy thing that can't handle getting kicked around a little.

Let's be patient folks. Good things come to those who wait.

I'm glad someone else said it. I guess it's the old saying "You can please some people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but there's some you just can't please at all."

Honestly, I think it's kind of exciting. Gives me something to look forward to, and I'm one that's HAPPY with both my 396 and 330 that I have.

I agree about the tank comment too. I've actually dropped my 396 a couple of times from at least a height of three feet, and here it soldiers on with nary a mark or scuff. Good stuff. I hope that they continue the tradition of keeping things compact. The 396's layout and size were a big factor in my purchase decision. I took a look at the GRE500 and its mess of buttons and said 'No thanks'.

I'll gladly give my money to Uniden again if this new surprise is worth it. Otherwise GRE can get it. That's what's great about competition, you can vote with your wallet!

I'm w/ you there. I have a GRE now, but my next purchase will be which ever scanner seems to get the best reviews. I do like the way Uniden's scanners are more durable, as well as their easy-flow menus.

All I want is a Mil Std type scanner with a better front end and a commercial type speaker.

Maybe it's not really a 'new' scanner coming out at all.. Maybe it's just a 396t with a multi LED and whatever new firmware changes they have made already in the radio or the changes that will make it closer to the 996 (temp lockout, multisite..etc). Then, they give current owners a choice of sending in for and LED 'xchange' for a fee...?

Hey UPman;

Is there any chance of a update for the BCT-15? I've really enjoyed the volume display added to the 996 and I think it would be a useful feature for the 15 as well. Thanks for your work.
