During a trip to East Texas 2 weeks ago, I copied 158.7300, P-25, in the area between Corrigan and Diboll, and the signal weakend as I approached Lufkin.

I suspect TDCJ Polunsky, since the comms I heard were along the lines of, "Seg 1, Seg 2, Seg 3, etc."

Would this be a valid supposition?

Try DPS Escorts. TDCJ Polunsky is still operating on CH 6 on 153.785 pl 100.0. If not DPS escort, then it could possibly be a county jail, or maybe the new private prison right next to Polunsky. I don't know if it is completed yet. The kind of cell assignments you would here from a TDCJ unit would be things like A3-1-06, or B9-3-44 and so on. Even seg cells are numbered like this. I might throw death row in there as a possibility as I have not a clue how they are numbered or even if they share CH 6 with the building. There is no license for 158.730 in the area, but the State has set up stations around Texas without a site based license before since they are authorized to use certain frequencies statewide, including 158.730.

DPS VIP protection

I was in Austin a couple of weeks ago, and the DPS special protective division (Governor security) was on 158.730 analog with a pl of 162.2 (repeater). It is certainly possible they have since gone P25 though. I have heard this division running simplex ops on this frequency (analog) in Houston while the Governor is in town in the past.

bpckty1 - could you determine if the comms were repeated or simplex?

Since I was driving, I couldn't give monitoring my complete attention, but it sounded like a simplex transmitter.

As for the governor's security detail, I have monitored them before, and this was definitely not the governor's detail. Also, I have noticed the 158.7300 frequency in the Nacogdoches area before. But, I am leaning towards a prison-type facility.

This is on RRDB:
Base Input License Type Tone Description
155.03250 158.73750 WPPA225 RM 100.0 PL Holliday Transfer Facility

But, as this is an input frequency, and has a tone, I suspect it may be a frequency in use near US 59, and the Livingston-Lufkin area is the most probable. Thus, the Polunsky unit is a unit of interest.

Since you said it is simplex, I would swing toward Death Row at the Polunsky Unit. I guess I could ask around or maybe do a driveby scanning next month when I am going to be in the area.

Went through Diboll/Corrigan last week. According to my Pro-96, the frequency is 158.7300, and not a splinter offset. And, definitely prison related. Still unsure if it is the Rudd Transfer Facility at Diboll, or which of the high security prisons in the area. But, the signal faded away south of Livingston and north of Lufkin.

I think I recall hearing the same frequency, but this time in Fayette County. It was definitely digital, but the transmissions were broken from where I was (in Round Top) so I think it might have been a good distance west or south of there. From the posts, this freqeuncy appears to be some sort of statewide common frequency, and not really local. As for the mention that the frequency mentioned in the post as associated with the Holliday Unit, I can definitely say that it isn't associated with that facility, because I listen to it in Huntsville, and have scanned that entire VHF band and never have found it. It sounds like a "mystery" to me!!!!

The frequency is in use in many parts of the state. A couple of years ago, I heard what appeared to be an ambulance on that frequency in the Nacogdoches area. I forget what the tone was, but it was in the 192.8 area, give or take a couple of tones.

But, I am leaning towards the Diboll/Corrigan area for prison (TDCJ or Private) use.

Mystery solved

The actual frequency is 158.7225. Heard it today while on 59 passing thru Diboll. It is P25 and licensed to TDCJ for use at their prison facility at Diboll.
