US Coast Guard Using Project 25 UHF Communcations in the South

For those of you interested in monitoring the Coast Guard, Chris Parris posted the following to his Monitoring Times Fed Files Blog, which is good info and well done work by Chris.

I received a report from the Southeast US that the Coast Guard has started utilizing some frequencies in the 406-420 MHz band for its operations.

413.0000 MHz, P-25 (NAC not reported but I suspect N293) was heard in use by Coast Guard Sector Charleston along with 2 MH-65C helicopters.

They referred to this as "CG-410", which makes some sense in the new NTIA naming schemes. The other CG P25 net channels all start with 1, such as NET 101, since they are all in the VHF band and the frequencies start with 1. The 400 MHz channel frequencies all start with 4, so the NET numbers will apparently start with 4 as well.

I have not heard of any routine use of the federal UHF band by the Coast Guard, but there have been some vague references to new UHF radios for CG cutters and law enforcement use. Keep watching this band for more Coast Guard operations. Here are some known UHF allocations for the US Coast Guard:

I was intrigued by this report when I first heard it. About 2 years ago I had about 4 or 5 units using tactical type call signs driving around, flying around the coast checking out propagation, range etc on 406.5000(151.4). This lasted about a week or so. Since then nothing has ever turned up in a search and that freq has remained in a scan list (Without the tone) Other than HF, VHF,UHF AM, VHF-FM Marine bands The only other place I've had CG Aircraft around the Boston area would be on 164.5500 & 166.2250, both FM, Both predating the CG-### (or the older LANT freq lists). Of course further searching and monitoring is continuing.

A bit of nitpick but USCG is now more of a Fed thing (DHS) than Military...
Probably why this is posted to the MT Fed blog and not the MT Milcom blog...

Probably why this is posted to the MT Fed blog and not the MT Milcom blog...

It may of been under the DOT and now DHS but it's still the 5th military service of the U.S.
