Has anyone heard any others?

While 9808 is a Deputy Marshall (I guess, never heard this unit in particular), all the 9 series unit indicates is that it is a non-VSP user with a VSP radio. By way of example, on channel 1, one will frequently hear 9503 calling Richmond. 9503 is a Va DMV special agent. Another example is 9340, which is a Va ABC agent. It used to be policy that the "9" was verbalised as"car" over the air, thus making the USMS unit in the initial post "car 808"...this practice seems to have fallen from favor, however.
I haven't heard any USMS units on the State radio, that i am aware of, but another frequent user in the past was "FBI car 308". Getting on occasionally as well is 9887, who works for the Dept of Defense...

And just FYI: 9772 is either the Richmond Police Chief, or the Richmond Department of Emergency Communications, I can't remember which.

RE:

Awesome .... see all of us alone we know squat but when we start exchanging info we can draw a picture
Its comical to hear how some state officials who rarely talk on the radio talk when they report an accident or such.. "hello dispatcher, state police please..

Anyways I just found out the TVA Police (TN Valley Authority) have access to VSP frequencies...

I also seem to remember the 9100-series guys being DCR units and 9200's being DGIF units...but there really doesnt seem to be any rhyme or reason to the car number asignments anymore. Also, not many of these units have State radios assigned to them, it just seems to be hit and miss who has one.

listening for ducting

While VSP is topic, can anyone tell me why Salem and Culpepper have the same tone (167.9) on 158.9850? Since they are adjacent districts, wouldn't this defeat the purpose?

Could be so the dispatcher can multisite the grey areas "pick up a transmission from 2 different towers" in case the units were weak on one in particular

Thanks Fmon, I've been meaning to ask the same question. It didn't seem right to me as I was programming the information. Also, on Salem's Ch. 12, is the correct pl 127.3 or 146.2? I got one from the RR database and the other from somewhere else.

I just returned from a two-week trip to Lake Philpott in Franklin CO and had both freqs programmed; 159.0000 with 127.3 and 158.9850 with 167.9. 159.0000 never came up so 146.2 must be the correct tone.

I should have—but didn’t—searched for another tone for Salem’s 159.0000 because three of my scanners return instant results.

I never heard Wytheville either, which is listed with 127.3 on 159.0000. This should confirm tglendye’s suspicion that 146.2 as listed on RR Database is correct for Salem. BTW, though Culpepper (158.9850, 167.9) would show on the display at times, the dispatcher was Salem. I was running a 785D, 96 and 92 with these tones running in my RV and a 2067 verified with the 96 or 92 in my car. The indication on the display would be whichever was closest on the scanlist at time of PTT. One scanner may display Culpepper while another would display Salem.

I finally put Culpepper on FM—or no tone on the 785D—thus I never saw it again.

I also scanned and verified most of the tones for Henry County/Martinsville, Franklin County/Rocky Mt, Patrick, and Carroll Counties from my campsite at Horseshoe Pt. I’ve collected a few additions, which will be submitted to the database. I could receive Floyd County while on the Blue Ridge Parkway but not from my campsite, could be that Floyd doesn’t have a tower on the Parkway peaks. I could hear Carroll County—also on the West Side of the Parkway like Floyd—from the campsite likely because the Parkway is much lower in altitude in the Meadows of Dan area or they have a tower on one of the peaks.

VSP Salem is 158.985/167.9 Channel 11 (South and West) and 159.000/146.2 Channel 12 (North). I listen to them all the time.

Wytheville is 159.000/127.3 Channel 7 and 159.165/167.9 Channel 8.

I have heard Culpeper on the same channel 11 as Salem. I don't know why this was setup this way. Culpeper used to be on different channels and tones from Salem. If I remember correctly, they had the same channel pairs as Appomattox so maybe that caused too much interference between the two in the upper areas of Appomattox.

I don't know why Culpeper's & Salem's tones would be the same either. I live in Rockingham County- which is on the south side of 2nd Division- and I live in southern Rockingham. Reception @ home is not that good, especially compared to Ch. 6 (Appomattox). In Rockingham, the troopers seem to have better reception, but I don't think it is the greatest.

Maybe the thinking is there would be no interference b/n the two divisions (Culpeper & Salem) due to the distance & terrain. I would think they would have some, but I haven't heard any.

VSP Ch 11 tones

Salem and Culpeper are not adjacent Divisions. The Culpeper Ch 11 is assigned to the northwest corner of the state, roughly the counties aside I-81 north of Harrisonburg to Winchester and WVA. Salem's Ch 11 is assigned south of Salem towards Martinsville and the NC state line.

Since there are some mountaintop repeater sites involved you might hear them a long way off, but the repeaters' input signals are protected by 200 - 300 miles and layers of mountains. VSP didn't do much to try to add new frequencies back in the 70's so had to reused them as best they could.
