I have a BIG problem....
My PC died.
I bought a HP laptop (Windows Vista) with no serial port.
Got a RS USB to Serial cable 26-183.
Installed the new driver from RS.
Every time I insert the cable to the laptop, the laptop wants to install the driver.
I can't find where the driver is that the laptop needs.
Can someone help me please?

Did you not get a CD with the adapter? Everyone I ever saw for sale had a CD with the driver in it

If you mean where it is in Vista, I have no idea and never want to know. My notebook is WinXP, My real computer is OS X.

OH, back up. If you got no driver with the adapter, do a google for that part number's driver?

I would first uninstall the driver from the system devices menu.

Go here

http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/CDM/CDM 2.04.06.exe

to download the latest driver by the manufacturer of the USB -> Serial chip, FTDI. They have the latest driver available, with numerous bug fixes.

It works for XP and Vista flawlessly for me.

That should work for you - if not, let us know and we can go from there.

No, it wasn't (perhaps English isn't your first language)

I see your poor attitude has only garnered a few responses.

BTW, you purchased a Prolific device that relies on their buggy drivers - expect to see some blue screens (or whatever Vista does when a hardware driver screws up); just FYI.

HEY
I figured out the problem.
The OP system is Visa 64 bit.
There are no drivers for the cable for Vista 64 bit.

The cable and drivers work fine on XP and maybe Vista 32 bit.

Live and learn....

There's hardly any drivers for current equipment that work with Vista 64 bit computer systems. It would have been a big help if you had stated you had the 64 bit OS to begin with

If I had known,I would have stated the OpSys as Vista 64 bit.
As I said before this OpSys is all new to me.
I'm learning more every day
Thanks for your input.

I've just installed a syba usb to serial cable (Prolific) on a Vista 64 bit Ultimate and had a hell of a time. Since I have Vista 64 bit Ultimate you cannot install non-digitally signed drivers butr there is a work around to it listed here
http://www.planetamd64.com/index.php?showtopic=30063&st=0&p=287010&#entry287010

The diver I used to install it I believe was the one here http://www.moschip.com/html/download_drivers.html as a few others I tried wouldn't install.

I also installed as admin. All is working fine now

Ah, I told you your problem wasn't clearly stated. :)

You should seriously consider replacing Vista with XP (or at least using a dual boot setup)

Do you really need Vista? Is it worth the hassles? (yes, there will be more of them)

usb to serial cable

if anyone is intersted, there is a cable made by iogear model # guc232a and it is just under $30.00 with shipping from tigerdirect.com. I just got one and installed it in about 2 minutes and it works just fine on my laptop with vista.

There is a way to get vista to install the drivers corectly. I have had a new computer for 11 days now with vista and the first thing is read the VISTA documentation and learn the operating system. I know it sucks to relearn but I am find that VISTA is pretty cool. In order to get older dirvers to install correctly is to use the compatability wizard when installing older programs and drivers. Look at this reference I had picked up the other day.on the radio shack website. I had a older serial port adapter and running into the same problem. Once I had followed these instructions everything worked fine.

Try it.
