usb to serial problems

I just purchased a new laptop computer which is running vista. The only way it came. Now I cannot get the usb to serial cable from Radio Shack to work. The system will not regonize it. Anyone have any solutions.

Did you try to find updated Vista drivers for your serial cable? And I've seen stuff about Vista & USB-Serial issues somewhere, can't remember where?

Also check to assure that whatever software your using is selecting the correct Com port.

MAKE SURE! That you enter the CD with the drivers before you connect the cable. Vista will try to download its own drivers which will make the cable useless. You need to cancel the auto download and do browse instead. Then point it to the correct operating system with the drivers on the CD.

Are you using Uniden's software?

It doesn't work with Serial to USB cables.

Get ProScan- it's among the best pieces of Scanner control/programming software I've ever used.

Uniden software works just fine with USB --> Serial cables.

im using USB to serial with vista and arc 396, bc tool,BCD396T and update tools. be sure you look on it for model and look up the latest drivers. vista i found wont let you choose the driver by browsing. i had to let it try to find it and fail then update driver from control panel to be able select folder with driver in it

Find out which chipset the converter uses and do a search online for updated vista drivers. I have had to do this with a bunch of adapters I purchased cheaply on ebay. I did a web search for 'vista prolific chip drivers' and installed those. No problems running UASD, bcTool, Proscan etc.

Assuming you are using Radio Shack 20-047 you would be trying to program a GRE made scanner. Check this RR Wiki link.
Connecting scanners via USB - The RadioReference Wiki then match the port in Configuration menu of software.

Edit: However, any USB ->serial should list in the Device Manage (per link above) if drivers are loaded correctly.

Also beware that very few USB->Serial adapters have 64-bit drivers. I'm just upgrading to a new machine with Vista-64 on it, and two of my three adapters are totally useless. Luckily, after *much* hunting, I found 64-bit drivers for one so I'm okay in a pinch.

I don't know if Uniden's adapter has 64-bit drivers.

Yes, Vista 64 signed drivers are available for the USB-1 cable from Uniden.

Sorry, that should read IT didn't for me. I was constantly getting "Communications Error! Check Remote Setting" blah blah blah.

ProScan read the radio just fine.

We're talking a BC796D with the included software, BC296CBC796DSS software...
