Real dumb question. These are FM right?

Not really a dumb question as the 156/157 mHz are FM and the 287 and 381's are AM.

Program your radio accordingly (if it doesn't default to the appropriate
setting)

 Sorry Jim we hit send at the same time, with the same answer !

All in the list should be FM except 287.800, 381.700, 381.800m which should be AM.

Most common for Coast Guard from NW Ohio for me is:

156.4500 Marine Ch 9
156.8000 Marine Ch 16
157.1000 Marine Ch 22
157.1500 Marine Ch 23

The Coast Guard will put out a short annoucenment on Ch 9 and Ch 16 in regards to broadcasts daily/nightly at 9:40 PM on Ch 22. I will also hear Station Toledo and Group Detroit radio checking on Ch 16 and Ch 23 and handing over their radio guard reponsibilities daily. Coast Guard Aux Air planes and occasional helicopters are monitored on Ch 23 along with other general Coast Guard operations. Other shipping traffic obtaining water level reports from Station Toledo on Ch 22. I find summer weekends are usually the busiest, radio traffic will sure be dying down again with fall and the approach of winter.

I will rarely hear traffic on other above listed Marine Channels. I also have 381.8000 in my 24/7 unattended monitoring/recording setup. I have never logged or recorded peep in at least the last 6 months that I've had that frequency programmed.

I agree with Rob. Even in search and rescue situations, the channels Rob F mentioned are the most active in my area near the southern end of Lake Michigan, with the addition of 157.05 and 157.075. I haven't heard much USCG on the 200 and 300 mhz freqs.

Far South-West lower Michigan.
Just stumbled upon this page on the coast guard web site and it might be handy to save and file. They even have a text and excel versions for download...

http://www.navcen.uscg.gov/marcomms/vhf.htm

Helped me fill in some missing channel numbers etc...

Edit:
Found some intresting charts too. Quote from the page:
"Charts showing predicted areas of VHF National Distress System coverage can be downloaded in .jpg format. Coverage plots assume a mobile transmitter power of 1 watt at sea level over water, and of 25 watts over land. Alaskan coverage was based upon reception of a 1 Watt transmission from a handheld radio 2 meters above sea level."

Link to the page: http://www.navcen.uscg.gov/marcomms/cgcomms/nds.htm

Just wish they were higher res images.
Ok ok ok ok i'll be quiet now :)

In the past, I have heard a lot of activity on 287.800, and 381.700 MHz., in AM mode. They can also use the Selfridge ANG freqs. as well.

I have heard Burke Lakefront Airport and a drawbride on 156.8000 when there is a search going on.
