Coast Guard (United States) Scanner Frequencies and Radio Frequency Reference... during a water rescue in Muskegon Michigan yesterday, My SDS100 got a few 1sec calls from USCG NET 127 that sounded encrypted / scrambled. Are these channels encrypted by chance? Note: Im aware that encrypted audio should not be audible, but I have had multiple "accidental decodes" on my SDS100 and SDRTrunk where encrypted audio was demodulated and audible, but not decrypted.)

Heres a screen recording of the audio... New video by Austin Hruskach

Encryption is available, yes.

That often happens until the scanner/software recognizes the signal as encrypted, which could take a fraction of a second to a full second or two.

In Sector Virginia about half of the USCG transmissions are encrypted. I listened to your audio track and it sounds very similar to what I hear.

I know sector Sault Ste Marie likes their encryption. Also shows RID 0 whenever my radio comes across it.

Why does it play unencrypted audio and then mute the rest?

Are you sure those comms were encrypted ? They sounded more like comms where you are just out of range that the scanner does not make a complete decode of the P25. I will hear that on one radio that is using a less than ideal antenna while the conversation is loud and clear on another radio. Just thinking out loud here.

@TerryPavlick...... Hey Terry that's very possible. I will hear one side of the conversation and it's sector Delaware Bay that I hear. I imagine when they're encrypted both sides of the conversation would be mute. I've spoken to those in the know who say they do use encryption on both sides of the conversation and I never notice because I don't hear them.

I'm assuming you're down in the Villas now? I wanted to ask you, I use CG 121 and CG 409. I'm on the river in the Bristol Burlington area, is it worth it for me to listen to some of the stuff at the shore? I have a rooftop ground plane, I know there's other p25 conventional frequencies used down by you with the Coast Guard Academy and all. Thanks.
