I presume that you are referring to Custom 1 through Custom 8.

Custom 1 is the default when you first manually enter a new frequency or talkgroup. That's enabled by default, so anything you add 'new' is enabled.

I don't use the others, but you could, for example, use them for a specific agency or other entity which does not really fit the available service types. Sort of a 'roll your own category'.

I'll program my local snow plow talkgroups as Custom 1 rather than the public works they use in the full database. That way I don't have to put up with all the other public works talkgroups/channels if I'm listening to the full database.
