Would this be a bad idea? I know it will have some impact on the database but its a simple process of changing the username by going through the vbulletin admin cp since i do that but i seen many modifications that allows the user to change it without having an admin do it thus the system still keeps record of their previous usernames.

As vbulletin did put in the "how many days must go by before this username can be used again, if im right etc" in so like if i changed my username, my previous name cannot be used for 90 days

Its a simple process but would it be done for free or a small price? thats up to wayne and the other person to decide

Just hope doing something like this doesnt impact on the server DB because its changing the username through the whole board and other applications on the site.

What are you talking about? You claim to know an awful lot about vBulletin and I know there native support for users changing their own user name. You can have passwords expire, but the user cannot change their own user name without a plugin.

I really wish they would set someone on here to Tachy goes to Coventry.

mods dont need this on top of people registering different accounts to avoid bans / moderation

people need to just learn to behave and live with the reputation they develop... good or bad...

no this has nothing to do with avoiding bans, if i dont like my username, i want to change it to something shorter if its available, this has nothing to do with avoiding anything because record will still be kept, i run the same bored and i do this the same way to my members, once they change, its a 90 day lock before they can change again.

I sent in a request to change the username and it was granted. I do pay for this service though. My account was only a few days old though.

well thats what i was saying, if i wanted to change my username and its only 3 months ago, i wanted to go to a new name as Claiborne_NC0648 if allowed unless i have to be a premium subscriber but still pay which i dont have a problem doing.

its better then reregistering another account plus i have a modification on my board that detects that anyways and does an auto user account ban.

The rules were established this way for a reason by Lindsay blanton.

Useename changes are allowed but only in special circumstances.

Maybe you should have picked a better username to begin with. Lindsay has enough to worry about. He doesn't need people from North Carolina changing their username every 90 days because the vanity of their old one wore off.

Calm down K8, they guy asked a simple question that could generate additional revenue for Linday. Sometimes when you register you pull a handle out of the blue and then have second thoughts later, I know that was my case. No one is evading anything, the prior info/posts would still link to the new name.

Money or not it's not a simple issue to change one's member name. I doubt Lindsay will change things.

The rules as they're stated stand as-is in the mean time.

if anyone managed a forum with 215,975 members and growing, you would understand why certain rules are in place.

I would think that changing a username is a little more complex than allowing it in the vBulletin admin control panel, given that the forum user accounts don't appear to by synchronized with the database or the wiki (you have to log in to each component of the site individually) I can only assume that emailing Lindsay for the change is so that he can manually update each of your username's across the website.

A small fee could work, but you need to think of the bigger picture. Everyone who helps with the site is a volunteer who each have lives to live, when we find time to come on and maintain our respective component of the website (database, forum, wiki) along with participating and assisting users on the forums our workload can at times be busy. If my theory in paragraph one is correct, you would expect that Lindsay have someone that is trust worth enough to have access to each of the administration areas of the site.

At the end of the day is it really worth the hassle? It's the participation that counts, not one's username.

We will change a persons username on request under appropriate circumstances. Please read the stickies in this forum for the details.

Thanks

OP had a simple request/question. Seems that it was taken out of proportion.

Either:

1. It can be done by anyone, or

2. Admins/Mods can do it at their discretion (free or for a fee), or

3. The script has the capability but it is not allowed on this forum, or

4. It can't be done at all

Some people need to chill and stop taking things out of proportion and context. Remember it is a board where anyone can ask question. If you do not have anything positive to contribute to a thread or do not have a solution to a question, read teh thread and leave it alone.

Personally, i would hate to ask a question and get blasted by someone having a bad day that has nothing valuable in their replies.
