What Forests are you interested in? By looking at your location I would assume the Toiyabe, the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit, the Tahoe, and possibly the Inyo. I have some information on each. Just let me know what you are looking for and I might be able to help you.

Exsmokey,

Would you happen to have some Call Signs for the Cibola National Forest? I am going to do some hiking in the Magdalena District next month and would love to listen on my handheld.

What good will callsigns do you? I'm curious.

They aren't used on the air, at least not significantly. You can't look up the stations, they're all federal, not assigned by or available from FCC, and considered 'sensitive' information at minimum, so they normally won't tell you if you call or write.

He probably means "unit identifiers."

Yes, I see the term "callsign" used to mean what individual units and individuals use when using the radio more often than for a license call sign.

Yes, Chad, I do have some information on Cibola National Forest unit designators. It is 26 years old because that is when I transferred from there, but I would bet things haven't changed that much. I also hiked every foot of the 200 mile plus trails on the Magdalena Ranger District in my four field seasons there. I wrote a guidebook on the District's trails while I was there. Due to the extensive drought in the southwest since then, I would bet some of the springs I used to rely on to camp when I was working those trails are now dry or dry much sooner in the year. I had gathered all my water source information from someone who had been on the District for 25 years and his information was dead on. I depended on those springs with my life as I hiked alone most often. Feel free to PM me for more information about the trails if you wish.

Crap, 26 years is a long time! I wonder if the trails even look the same now? I was only 26 years and 3 months old when I transferred to Magdalena.
