Back when I lived in So. California, I could pick up South Zone talking to 4 different USFS Fire HQ's, as well as USFS units & some BLM Fire traffic.

Questions:

1. What frequency would North Zone use that I could pick up in San Jose, if any?

2. Do they still use those 415 MHz channels now for So. Zone & USFS?

The North Zone net was disbanded (no pun intended) several years ago. NIFC is using a lot of 400 MHz frequencies for logistics, camp nets and linking repeaters and cross band aircraft remote bases. All these are part of the national cache and only used on large incidents. Many National Forests are still using UHF to link remote bases/repeaters.

Federal UHF links and NorthOps

The feds have "rebanded" the 406 to 420 mhz band. All repeater outputs will be from 406 to 411 mhz. Inputs are 9mhz higher. Slowly they are moving everyone to fit the new plan. An example is Tahoe National Forest Net which used to be repeated on 415.4750, it is now 408.9875. Search from 406 to 411 in 12.5khz steps.

I believe NorthZone (actually it has been NorthsOps for about last 10 years) is still up and running as a net. They have moved it over to the state microwave system so you do not hear it on vhf/uhf anymore. A Plumas NF radio tech gave me this info about northops a few weeks ago.

All Tahoe Forest net traffic (both mobiles and dispatch) is heard from every mountaintop they have. My guess is it is from a remote base at Wolf Mtn (or similar) to dispatch center in Grass Valley.
