I am thinking about monitoring my car after a recent car break in with a small discrete FM transmitter ... aka a bug. The one I want has a vox circuit so that it only transmits when sound is detected by the microphone.

So, the needed range is about less than 100 feet, but it is a bit obstructed. I am also not sure if I will have to mount something outside / inside my car.

Wondering if anyone has used such a device and can advise on frequencies ?

I see the cheap ones use FM band frequencies (88-108 MHz) where as other (better ?) ones use other frequencies.

I just happen to have a Pro2005 scanner just waiting to be used for this. Or else a dual band Baofeng depending on the frequency used.

Thanks

I used to have one years ago that I bought at a spy shop at the mall. Back when those existed in malls. Or existed at all. I actually still do have it somewhere.
If my memory serves me, it runs on a button cell which didn't last long. It does have VOX though.

Since you're very close, maybe you can just use a baby monitor? I'm not sure what audio alone is going to tell you. A picture's worth a thousand words.

It is more for the notification that something is happening so I can go and investigate.

The plan .. go there, and take the ******** picture on my phone. And catch him / her in the act and call 911 at the same time.

A baby monitor is a good idea. Never thought of that .. and probably cheaper .. and easier to change batteries.

i had an alarm the used sound mics on the door hinge area that would send a pager type alarm on an off cb channel. i would work doing security in buildings but my friends knew to just tap my car to get me. i think it was 27.045 an in between channel for such use it used the am antenna.

When the grandson was younger we had a monitor with a video camera and IR light. Wife got it so I don't know how much it cost. Reasonable screen display for what it was. Not sure what the max. range would be.

...snip...

Look what I found.
This would be handy because it has an external antenna and you can clip it somewhere.
Then again by the time you heard the window getting smashed, your stereo and everything else of value has already been taken out.

I wonder if using a car cover would be at all effective as an unconventional way to deter break ins. I mean, ya gotta take it off first or cut it. What a pain.

You can get a Viper remote start/alarm system including parts and labor for less than $300. Uses two way paging so you get audible and visual alerts on your key fob for motion/intrusion alarms.
