Using scanner over internet

Hello.

Can anyone tell me if any program or software exists to use scanners over the internet for multiple users? I'm looking for something similar to how the global tuners site functions but just for a group of friends who also have scanners to share and it be private, not public like global tuners is.

In my naivety I thought it would be quite easy to set up myself, but apparently not! I've been told by someone more clued up on such matters that to allow people to tune them you need APIs (?) to talk to back end servers to control user inputs and all kinds of other technicalities which I don't understand! ..hence why I'm enquiring to see if any off-the-shelf software packages exist to do this. If nothing exists does anyone know what costs would be involved to get someone to do this and any recommendations?

If you have Uniden-based scanners, you may want to check out Proscan software. It's an all-in-one solution that includes scanner over IP functionality, which allows you to stream feeds and control them remotely (both private and public). They have a 30-day free trial to test it out.

I second the choice for proscan. I use it with a remote scanner and a friend uses it too. Great solution.

Let us know what type of scanners, if Uniden, then I agree with the others, Proscan is the best solution.
I use it for my own private use. I can listen and control the scanner from work, or anywhere, and I can listen in the car via cell phone. It's a great solution.

Thanks for your replies guys. The radios are varied - AOR 8200, Sony XDR F1HD, Icom PCRs, Icom IC-706, various Yaesus and various Bearcat's. Will the "Proscan" work for all these? The web page suggests it's only for Uniden radios. I'm looking for an all-in-one solution if it exists with a generic GUI for each radio.

This could be a shot in the dark, but you should be able to use the TeamViewer program to control the scanner. It is a program that lets you control anothers computer so you should be able to load the scanner program and control it from another computer. I dont know if the sound works through the connection though.

Sound is terrible

I tried team viewer but switched to proscan. The audio codecs don't really work well with the scanner audio.

I use this one (its free as well) to stream privatly - it has settings for public type of streaming also if you want and you can control the bitrate - i personally use 24k mp3 and stream it to my iphone when out and about

Mines set to automatically run and auto start streaming whenever my system is booted - I run a ancient non computer controlled scanner and just hook it up through the scanners line out socket and into the computer - but if you have one of those computer type ones you can also set it up to take advantage of those i think

Are you trying to setup a scanner feed online so everyone can hear it? I think you can use TeamSpeak for that.

OP is seeking ability for multiple (private) users that can control a scanner remotely so that they can each listen to what they want when other users are offline. An example of this concept is remote controlled webcams that each user can takes turns with the controls and can look at whatever they want from a remote location.

As for solution, I have no experience with online streaming, but the easiest solution (in my opinion) would be to have a radio that already has software developed for remote access (like a Uniden scanner). You could then set up a remote desktop (like Teamviewer) and allow people to control it while simultaneously streaming it online using a different client. There may be some streaming delays, but it would work.
