I have assigned quick keys to my various favorite list, and when I press 5 enter to access that list it does nothing. Please help me get a clue how to use the quick keys - the manual is no help at all.

If you look on the top row of the display, the line that begins with "F", in the ninth character postion you should see either "5", "*" or "-". (The "F" is position 1 for counting).

If you are seeing a dash "-", then the Favorites List has not been downloaded to the scanner or the Favorites List is set to Monitor Off. Monitor On or Off is something set via Sentinel (Edit Profile), or could be done through the keypad (Set Scan Selection>Select Lists to Monitor and scroll to the Favorites List).

If you have "5" the Favorites List is on. Perhaps there are some Systems/Departments/Channels that are avoided.

If you have "*" (an asterisk) then the FL is turned off. 5 Eyes should turn it back on.

Probably splitting hairs a little here, but you are not "Accessing" a Favorites List with a FLQK. All you are doing is turning the Favorites List on or off with the quick key. (To me "Accessing" means you are trying to get to the Favorites List for programming purposes, which is a whole 'nother thing.

It would also help if you post the model you are using, as different models have different ways of enabling/disabling them.

I am completely flummoxed by the whole Quick Key thing. I mean, I have an idea how it’s supposed to work but I haven’t figured it out, yet. Or, maybe I haven’t set it up properly, but it doesn’t seem to work when I try it.

I have 49 Favorite Lists, labeled from “0” to “48”. In Sentinel, in Edit mode, I gave each FL it’s own number. Is that all I have to do? Or is there something else that I haven’t yet done that I need to do? What are “Number Tags” and why would I need them? Is a “number tag” like a specific number for that channel in that FL? For example, if my local fire department is in FL #31, and there are two channels, “East” and “West”, would the number tags be “1” and “2”, for example? So for “East”, I’d punch “31.1”? Or is that still not right?

You are getting there!

Yes that's all you have to do to set up Quick Keys for Favorites Lists. To toggle a Favorites List Quick Key (FLQK), the key press sequence is xx Eyes where xx is the FLQK number. So for FLQK 11, it is 11 Eyes.

You understand the Number Tag concept correctly - it is a method to "jump" to a desired channel and hold on that channel.

Number Tags are optional - you can set them if desired but don't have to. I have just a handful of channels number tagged, only those that are more important to me.

A Number Tagged channel has an "address" consisting of three parts: One part is the number tag for the Favorites List in which it is located, the number tag for the System and the number tag for the channel.

While Favorites Lists Quick Key Numbers and Favorites Lists Number Tag can be different, it's easier on my memory if they are the same. So using your example, I suggest using 31 as the Number Tag for Favorites List 31.

You didn't mention anything about Systems. They too should (for ease of initial understanding purposes) have a System Quick Key and a System Number Tag. Again I recommend using the same number for both. (I'll assume 0 for the System Number Tag for this discussion).

The last part, the simplest, is the channel Number Tag, which you have set for 1 (the East) and I presume 2 for the West.

Now that you have the "stuff" set for Number Tags, here is how it would go. You want to stop scanning thus placing the scanner on "Hold", which is done by pressing the Channel button. Next you want to keypress that "address" for the desired channel, or in your case 31.0.1. Lastly you'll press Channel again to complete "jumping" to the desired channel.

In summary it's <Channel 31.0.1 Channel> to jump to a number tagged channel.

Quick Keys and Number Tagging can be intimidating for a new user. For better or worse, I liken it to knot tying. When you are first learning how, it is difficult. The more practice you have, it becomes second nature.

To add to ofd's post, I think what confuses people sometimes is that you have to actually be scanning in order to enable/disable Quick Keys. You do this sort of 'on the fly' in other words. Alternatively you have to stop and be holding on a channel in order to navigate to a different channel using Number Tags.

I’ll have time to play with it more after next week. Hard part was getting the FLs the way I want them. Good to know that I don’t have to go through and assign a “number” to each individual “channel”, but just the few that I want to be able to go to directly if I need to.

If a particular department is on “Channel 125”, I want to be able to, like in the old days, punch in “1-2-5-Enter” or whatever the correct combination is with the 536.

Essentially you can. With the new memory architecture of the scanner, a few more things have to also be entered.

I think you'll find it is pretty easy stuff once you tinker with it.
