I am about to install a Uniden BC-996T in my car. I would like to do GPS-based scanning, as I am on the road a lot. Before I go and purchase a separate GPS receiver, might it be possible to tap into my vehicle's GPS instead? Has anybody tried this or know where I might be able to find out more about this possibility?

Eagerly awaiting your reply.

I have investigated this regarding my Honda Pilot (and before that my Honda Odyssey) and was never able to find a way to do this. I inquired upon several forums dedicated to the vehicles as well as here and no one knew of a way to do so.

I suspect that the GPS receivers used by these Navigation Systems are enclosed in the brainbox, in my Pilot it is under the driver's seat, but with all the cabling being specialized to the vehicle there is no recognizable serial port.

When I worked with a Motorola Automotive Group Oncore GPS design engineer, he told me auto makers use the GPS manufacturer's proprietary binary communications format because of its superior diagnostic data and ease to work with for programming. The Uniden requires NMEA.

This would be cool if you could get this to work, but it doesn't seem possible.

You could always purchase a separate GPS unit. I utilize a hand held unit, a Magellan Meridian Color. The unit must support NMEA.

TRUE - but i believe the purpose of this thread is to find a way to use GPS without having to buy a seperate GPS unit, handheld or not.
