Found and worked out another EDACS system, this one in 395-400 MHz. Again, MANY I-calls used, so that must be turned on to pick up much of the traffic.

Nice work again Skip, many of these Vessels have been eluding monitors for years, but as you know it only takes a little bit of time and using the SEARCH button to track them down...

To give an example of what I mean by 'weak away from the ship', I'm 250 feet up, looking 'down' onto San Diego Harbor from about 7 miles away, with a discone up 20 feet, low loss cable.

Signals from this ship, presumably line of sight, are 1, sometimes 2, bars on a 996XT signal meter.

Signals from other ships are even weaker.

The Carl Vinson is in port, and I can't even hear her system strong enough to ID it.

I expect these systems have no external antenna, probably depending on 'lossy coax' antennas threaded all through the ship's interior spaces, with MAYBE a bit of said coax strung outside the ship's 'Island', to cover the deck. Designed for low power, short range. The Navy doesn't like to have its ships lit up like christmas trees in RF, even when radio silence isn't in force.

A confederate & I once determined an EDACS system in use by a USN ship docked, but the interesting thing was we found that their Marine security detail manning the entry control point & doing a roving patrol along the pier was using a standalone simplex channel for their ops. It wasn't due to range issues, as other parties on shore were using the Hydra system.
