Rick:

Once in the past I created a .csv file for use with UT by editing the files that contain the TG and user alias info. I did this by copy and paste, but now I can't seem to remember how to do it properly. I know this sounds stupid, but I can't get the necessary "" (quote marks) to appear around the text that I'm pasting in which is necessary for UT's files in some fields. I believe that I had read in the base UT files in Excel as .csv, edited, and exported as .csv (but with the proper UT extensions), but it's not working properly now (no quote around text). Any idea what can be done if I insist on using this method rather than manual entry through the program?

It looks like Excel will provide enclosing quotes on alpha cells that contain commas. Quotes are desirable for Label, Notes, and system type but they are not required - as long as there are no embedded commas.

For example, a talkgroup labelled
"Liver, Dog"
is okay but
Liver, Dog
is not.

Since Excel provides the quotes when it matters, you should be okay.

Thanks Rick. I guess I'm scratching my head on one thing, and I'll try it again, but I thought that UT had to see the quote marks to properly display the text-data (regardless of commas in the name). I thought I had tried it before without quotes in the label and notes fields and it only showed blanks in the running program, even though text was present in the file(s). Perhaps I missed the proper number of commas since I was creating the files from scratch...
