Does anyone have any ideas for an event for February? I think Tom mentioned an amateur radio auction of some kind, with maybe a social event afterward. Does anyone have details?

Also, just a quick note. I really appreciate everyone's patience while we work out how this group functions. We've had a few mis-steps, and some amazing progress. The contributions to the wiki have been really astounding. One month ago the wiki was launched, and already there are 56 articles on the site! Thank you everyone for your effort. This is entirely a community driven project, for the benefit of the community. I'm sure we'll make plenty of mistakes. We have a big eraser for just such occasions. I think we will also make some great progress toward promoting our hobby in a responsible manner.

One thing I'd like to get figured out is how to get audio up on the site. Do any of you now record what you hear on the scanner? What format is the audio in (wav, mp3, etc)? How long do you keep old audio? Do you edit the audio at all (cut out portions you don't want)?

Does anyone think it would be a good idea to set up a 'booth' at the swapmeet? It is $5 for a table. I don't know the Utah VHF Society crowd. Are they likley to not be interested in public saftey monitoring? I'm not sure we have enough volunteers, but it would only take a few dedicated people to make it worthwhile.

The only problem I have is that it starts at 8am. I'm more of a go to bed at 8am kind of guy, not a wake up at 8am person.

I would say no.

The crowd is really looking to purchase hardware. Now if you had a table full of scanners you wanted to unload cheep, I would say go for it!

I am planning on being at the Swap so I will see you guys there...

Utah VHF Society swap meet,

Hello Yes I did talk about the UT VHF Society swap meet,
It would be good to know how repeaters work and also a good way to kill two birds with one stone so to speak. We could meet other Ham radio Operators and Scanner enthusiast Some Ham Operators help The Public service IE some Hams are involved in public service some are not, This is due to the fact that in my county the Weber County Sheriff has made ARES into Axillary of Weber County Sheriffs office
I have also heard that the Ogden City police might do the Same too. I think that ARES should be for every ham operator and not be connected to the law enforcement agenncis, it makes Hams look like cops when we are Just Volunteers.

That said bring you scanner if you want and set up a booth and help others fix their rebanding problems that would be nice.

PS here is the info on the VHF Society web site

The Utah VHF Society - Directions to Swap Meet at Utah Fair

Mark your calendars: Saturday, February 28, 2009 is the day of the 2009 Utah VHF Society Swapmeet. This annual event is one of the largest ham-radio events in the state where you can lay eyes on those with whom you've been talking on the radio as well as buy/sell your junque!

As with the past several years, this year's swapmeet will be held at the Utah State Fairgrounds.

The entrance is through Gate 1 (shown in the picture at the top of the page.) This gate is about 500 feet north of North Temple on 10th west and is the main entrance to the fairgrounds. There is ample parking to the north of the building after you go through the gate. Parking and access near the building itself is limited, so please leave that parking for those who need to unload/load their stuff, as well as those who need special access.

Saturday, February 28, 2009, beginning at 8:00 AM.

What about admission?

* Admission is FREE for current UVHFS members
* $5.00 for non member adults
* $2.00 for non members 12 years old and under.

Interesting thought Tom_AF7J. I do like the idea of helping people with rebanding issues. Especially considering that Utah was chosen by GRE to beta test their latest firmware update for the PSR 300/400. If the booth ended up happening it might be handy to have a printout of scanners that are currently reband compliant.

This alone changed my thoughts on getting a table.

I think we should get a table, provide information on rebanding and the current state of scanning in Utah. Anyone that is coming have a laptop they can bring? someone wanna make a PowerPoint? I think that we could be a good service and help some, and make others aware of the situation currently.

We ended up with family coming in from out of town... unexpectedly (don't you love that?). Did anyone get to go? How was it? Any pictures?

Since one ARRL publication was the only thing I had actually intended to buy, I wasn't too motivated to get up early on a Saturday morning. I showed up at noon, and only found only one small group of cars in the parking lot, none of which had any antennas or ham vanity plates. I gave a call in 146.62, and k7hfv confirmed that it was already over.
