• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

im trying to get my uv-5r to scan in memory mode or channel mode... i press and hold the scan button and it says scanning begin, but it just goes straight to channel 1 and does nothing.. if i set both a/b freqs to say channel 7, doing a scan just takes them back to channel 1 and it stops.. theres nothing broadcasting on channel 1 though, its a ham radio UHF repeater freq on channel 1, i just got done programming 50 channels on this thing manually and it wont even scan the memory so its no good to me.. does anyone possibly know why?

This is a quirk of the UV-5R and its variants.

When you manually program memory channels into the radio, they are not immediately placed in the scan list. It is when the radio is powered on or after a reboot (which occurs after an upload or download when using a computer), that the scan list is created.

So after a session of adding channels using the keypad, power cycle the radio to get them put into the scan list.

I haven't figured out how to create a scan list let alone scan anything. What a nice little radio to have such a ****ed up manual.

The radio automatically creates a "scan list" when it is powered up or rebooted. The "scan list" is based on whether the SCAN flag of each programmed memory is set to ON (1) or OFF (0). When the SCAN flag is set to ON, the memory gets added to the "scan list". When the SCAN flag is set to OFF, the memory is not added to the "scan list" (which means it won't be scanned when scanning).

Memories that are programmed using the keypad will always have the SCAN flag set to ON. They won't be added to the "scan list" until after the radio is power cycled or rebooted. The only way the SCAN flag of a memory can be changed to OFF or set to OFF to begin with is by using software.

This is done in the...
- OEM software by editing the SCAN_ADD column: "ON" = scanned, "OFF" = skipped
- CHIRP software by editing the Skip column: " " = scanned, "S" = skipped

Scanning is initiated in MR/Channel mode or VFO/Frequency mode by pressing and holding the [*SCAN] key until scanning begins. If menu 14 (VOICE) is set to ENG, a "scanning begin" prompt will be heard.

Menu 18 (SC-REV) determines how or if scanning resumes after scanning has been stopped by a received signal.
Menu 7 (TDR) is disabled while while scanning.
Menu 1 (STEP) determines the VFO frequency change while scanning in VFO/Frequency mode.

The direction of scan can be changed by tapping the [^] and [v] arrow keys

The scan function can also be used to...
- scan for stations in Broadcast FM mode.
- scan for CTCSS tones and DCS codes.
