UV-82 Programming Cable

Picked up an almost brand new UV-82 from a friend. The goal is to get the radio back to all default settings and reprogram.

I have never programmed a radio. I know zero about drivers. Please suggest a programming cable that will work the best with CHIRP. (Assuming CHIRP is the program I need.)

Be prepared to spend about $20.00 for one with a genuine FTDI chip. Some of the "bargain" cables cause the radio to transmit when you connect to the computer. You will also have trouble with the driver if you choose many of the cheaper cables, especially on Windows 10. Many of the fake chips will not work in a 64 bit environment.

I've updated my cheap cables to cp-2102 chipsets. As effective as an FTDI; but at a cheaper cost. $3 part on eBay.

FTDI Chip cables can be a bit more pricy than cheap cables, but they are worth their weight in gold! I have used knock-off cables before and I exclusively use FTDI Chip cables now. They hold up and most importantly, they work! I use them on both Mac and Windows without issue.

Kawamall has a good reputation, the sell on ebay.
The cable is a standard Kenwood programming cable actually, BaoFeng uses the same hardware interface (same plugs, same spacing, same functions) that Kenwood does, which makes things simpler.
Probably more important than the details of the cable, is to buy it from a merchant who has a solid reputation.

I have never had any problems using cables with the Prolific chipsets. It's all I use on my Windows 10 machine because it just works plug n play, no messing around with drivers.
