• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I've got three UV-82HP radios, each with same firmware (N82-33/US2S35).

While programming them with CHIRP, I noticed these two editable fields:

6+Power-On Message 1: 150820N
6+Power-On Message 2: [blank]

These are separate from the Firmware Message (lines 1&2) and the regular Power-On Message (lines 1&2).

What is the purpose of these? It isn't a serial number because it's the same between all three of my radios, both the two that I've programmed and the one that is still "virgin" as received new.

Does CHIRP or the Baofeng software use these messages to determine something about the radios (type, chipset, manufacturing date, etc.)?

Are the messages intended for use by the owner, possibly to identify individual radios?

I could guess and experiment, but I'd rather hear from someone who actually knows what the purpose is.

Thanks in advance.

I directly wrote to the support folks at Baofeng Tech who responded quickly and clearly:

The power on messages can be changed at will - the firmware number (which cannot be changed) is the only hard loaded number

That kind of support makes me glad that I bought my Baofeng radios through them.

The 6 power on message 1 appears to come from the factory as a date code. I haven't seen enough of them to be able to tell if it is for the firmware or the actual date the radio was made or tested.

Thanks. I've got three UV-82HP radios with significantly different serial numbers and all came with the same 6+Power-on message. You could be completely correct, though, as I have no idea how one decodes the serial numbers or how many UV-82HPs they produce in a day.

I see customization of that message as a great way to identify the radio owner (with a callsign), radio number (of a set), or programming (e.g. "Maint", "FrtDesk", "FltCrew", etc.)

It would be nice if CHIRP had a setting for 'no-change'. Then someone could program a per-radio message and still upload preset configurations without overwriting each radio's unique message.
