Heard a lot of traffic last night on 154.695 from the Richmond VA area. It appeard that state police were using this to track car stealing or drug traffic. Did any else here this traffice and if so what units ( and freq) where they using for the units on the ground. Either this was used by helo or plane survillence.

The signal was a S9 on my scanner from James City and Surry Co, 50 miles away.

I didn't hear the traffic, but 154.695 is their survillence and it is simplex. Also, I don't know if you noticed a pl tone or not. I learned (on this site) that this frequency is CSQ, however when the troopers transmit across it they transmit with their divsion channel pl tone however they receive it CSQ. If you monitor it with a pl tone you may miss parts or all of conversations- depending on the way the trooper has his/her radio set.

I know about not having a pl tone for the 154.695 freq.....do you think they were talking to state units or Richmond police since the streets were in the city of Richmond?
Most of the traffic was around 2130-2330.

Motorhead3902 or boxalarm187 could answer that question better than I can. If you recall the unit numbers, you can reference the following taken from the VSP in Va's frequency database:

UNIT NUMBERING SCHEME:
BADGE# POSITION
1 superinendent
2 deputy superintendent
3-5 Lt Col's (bureau directors)
6-14 Majors
15-49 Captains
50-120 Lieutenants
121-249 First Sergeant
250-499 Sergeants
500-1999 Troopers
3901-3999 Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officers
4000-4999 BCI Agents
5000-5999 Non Sworn with radio
9000-9999 Other agency with vsp radio

I recall reading a while back that Henrico Co. used VSP's tac channel some- but I don't know about survillence. I don't know if that is still true, and I (also) don't know about the City of Richmond. I did see a VSP trooper working radar in my town the other day. I've lived here a long time and that's the first time I have ever seen radar worked by a trooper inside the town limits.

Sorry I can't provide much help. Interesting question.

I've heard them working drug surveillance on 154.695 recently in Newport News and Portsmouth. No PL in either case but the Portsmouth case ended up with a high speed chase which terminated as the perpetrators crashed into an overpass railing over Lake Kirby on the Suffolk bypass. The Perps in NN never produced anything sufficient to merit a bust.

I heard it but only one side of the conversation as I was listening to an old 8 channel I have at work. I could hear the tailing unit and actually went outside and saw what I believe was the police plane flying around. They weren't too far away, just over off of 360 in eastern Henrico.

They followed this guy all over the place and he was killing his lights when he pulled into the apartment complex.

It was pretty interesting.

My guess would be that you heard the plane traffic from Richmond. The unit traffic was unable to be heard due to it being simplex and the units were too far away. I know in my area they only use the plane for VASCAR. They measure the time it takes a car to go from one line painted on the interstate to another line and then determine how fast the vehicle is going. If speeding, they will send a ground unit to intercept and give a summons. Was this possibly what you were hearing?

I am familiar with VASCAR and I don't think that was it. They were definitely tailing someone and giving every street that he took, apartment complex's he went into, neighborhoods, etc.

Bad thing was I couldn't hear the other end of the conversation. At one point, the guy I heard asked if he should break off and let another untit pick him up.

I'm actually selling my Kenwood TS-711A to buy a Pro96, so I'm very excited about what I'll be able to listen to then.

I too heard this traffic after advised by Larry (RGN). I was driving toward Richmond at the time and agree the air ubit was tracking one specific car.
The air officer was calling out changes in direction and street names. West Broad St and Monument Avenue were streets mentioned that I recognized. At one point toward the end the air unit wasn't sure what street the suspect vehicle was on and had to look it up. Shortly after that it seemed he returned to the VSP airport.

As I drove onto I-295, I did hear some ground traffic but wasn't able to pick out what was said. I then returned to scan mode and found a chase
going on 159.000. I suspect this was related to the .695 traffic. On the local news on channels 8 & 12, there were reports of a chase that had just ended. Was this the same?

I missed the chase that night. It could have been the same guy though.

I heard a pretty good chase last night at work. I'm in Richmond and I have an Icom V-8000 in my car with a Hustler co-linear on top of my van. I heard Fairfax division chasing 2 hispanic males that started near Dulles and ended up in town. They called in the city guys to put out stingers and nailed them. Only bad thing was I was listening to 159.000 at the best part, all the Richmond units start calling in 10-27's and I missed the stinger part. I heard the end of it where 2 males were in custody. The speed was in excess of 80mph.

Getting my Pro-96 this week! :D

I've heard traffic on this freq with both 167.9 CTCSS and with open carrier squelch. Most of the ops are within a few miles of me, and it does sound like an aircraft is directing the surveillance.

Not sure of the nature of crime that they're investigating, but Richmond does have a federal grant to put extra manpower on the streets, and the VSP have helped out in the past. It sounds like narcotics, but I wouldn't want to wager on it...

This is a fairly recent development, and it'll be interesting to see how long it lasts. Given that it's being heard elsewhere, I have to wonder if it's a special program.

I remember seeing something in the news where Richmond asked for federal assistance in dealing with the increase in gang activity here in Richmond. The recent late night nightclub shootings to be specific.

Aparently, there is a certain "attire" that these gang members where like white dew rags, long white t-shirts, etc. When clubs refuse them entry, they wait outside and shoot people when the club closes. I think the article said something about FBI agents coming to Richmond to assist. I'm sure this stuff is more than likely drug related, thus the increase in manpower.

There was another shooting less than a month ago on Broad St. Should be interesting to listen to.

Some guy on a crotch rocket got caught near I-76 in NE Colo last night. They clocked him in excess of 160mph; stayed ahead of one of CSP's Z-28 camaros for many miles. Only problem was when he got off the interstate, he had nowhere to hide. They got him trying to hide in a barn--

Heard more activity on this frequency last night. I heard mention of 25th St., Witcomb Court and Selden.

Not much chatter other than locations.
