I think the valley rail road has gone digital. I have pro 2096 scanner and I can no longer hear the, all I get is digital hash. I think it might be D-star or somthing like that.:p

They wouldn't be using D-Star, that's for amateur radio only, not for commercial use. If they went digital it could be P-25. However the frequency might be being also used for and end of train indicator.

I know the person that does their radios. He is a huge Moto guy, so i dont think it would be NXDN, but you never knowsince that is what most RRs are switching to. If italk to him at all i will ask if they switched. I cant pick them up where i am so i cant listen to find out myself.

I do not live to far from the valley rail road, so I am fairly sure its them. I just don,t know what kind of system they are using. Also why would they change. Their old radios seem to work just fine. Maybe they got a deal on some new ones.

Why ? Narrowbanding and the Railroads in general are moving away from Analog

Also, could it be another user? Maybe an Adjacent Freq?

Not Where You Think

It's NXDN (aka IDAS) or nothing for digital since they're a common carrier AAR and TRAIN member on the AAR bandplan. Any other mode would prevent interoperability/interchange.

I suspect you're probably getting some sort of interference from an adjacent frequency or intermod overloading the scanner's front end from a paging system.

Just a thought: Why don't one of you who lives in the local area phone the VRR office and ask for their radio person who will probably be glad to tell you what the story is?

Could it be someone using their portable from another RR? I know some Amtrak and Metro North people who volunteer at VRR. Just a thought.

The guy who foes their installs doesn't work there full time. He just volunteers there. One of their dispatchers or someone in the office may know thouh so the phone call may still be a valid option.
