Not sure what the FCC charges for all the paperwork but I did use the W5YI group when I changed my FCC issued callsign and same with my fathers to our vanity callsigns. They charge $39.95 it covers all the fees and paperwork so you don't have to file all the paper work yourself through the FCC ULS database.

It's not difficult at all. You can do it all online at the FCC site and it costs about $15. I suggest that you check out N4MC and AE7Q websites for a good tutorial and to find out what calls are available to you. I have applied for vanity calls three times (twice for myself and once for my wife). Easy to do.

Yes, you can apply for and pay for an amateur radio vanity callsign online using the FCC's web site. I'm on my second vanity callsign and applied for both of them myself. You will need to know the FRN for your license (it's printed on the license the FCC sent you or you can find it by looking up your license on the FCC's web site) and you will need to know the password assigned to the FRN. This may take some effort, but it's all do-able directly through the FCC.

The FCC Universal Licensing System can be found here:

FCC Universal Licensing System (ULS): ULS Home

The N4MC site mentioned above is a great place to research available callsigns and has a good tutorial on how to apply. Check the FAQ and the Land Mines tabs for information. The N4MC site is here:

Anyone know how long it takes to get the vanity call sign once the FCC list your application as 'pending'?

A few days, a week, two weeks sometimes longer all depends how busy the FCC is with all the applications for callsigns.

Vanity calls are granted on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Depending on which day of the week your application is received, the wait is 18-21 days. Check out AE7Q's website and you can see the database of applications being processed. For example, applications received yesterday, 8/13, will be granted on 8/31.

Thanks to all who answered, I will look at all recommended sites to help guide this process.

I was able to do mine through the FCC. However, it took a better part of a month to get mine. They had to "wait" a few weeks. (I applied 6/6 and got it on 6/24 -- the day before Field Day, and got my first DX that night). It was really easy for me to do it. My father also applied for his vanity, but he want through W5YI, and paid about $40, while I went though the FCC and paid about $15. Also -- of note -- the price is changing either this month or next (Aug/Sept).
