Hello, all.

Interesting situation here. I applied for a vanity call sign on 11/6/14. I am currently a tech and I'm scheduled to take my general on 11/22/14.

A few things could happen here. Vanity license gets approved but paper license doesn't arrive until after the test date. Also, the vanity application may not be processed prior to the test date, and I would test under my current call sign with an application pending.

What route should I be taking here to ensure that there are no hiccups when it comes to the FCC processing both the vanity application along with the general upgrade?

Now that I look back, I should have just waited to apply for a vanity until after my test, but there's nothing I can do about that now...

Thanks for the help and insight!

That's exactly what happened to me - went for my general exam, vanity call approved, but no paper ticket yet.

Write you new call sign on the forms, if it's already in ULS, otherwise it will not go through. Print everything and bring all copies and originals to the exam. VEs might not immediately know what to do, but keep telling them and show printouts that ULS has your new call sign now.

Now if the application is still pending, put your old call sign on the form, but also put the pending application number into the appropriate spot on the form ("do you have any pending applications...")

That said, you are cutting it very close, vanity applications take about 18 days, so chances are - your new sign may be approved and issued after the exam, but before VEs submit your application, no idea what happens then

Worst case - VE will have to resubmit the application, dont worry too much about it.

Either way, your FRN will be the same. Write your frn and leave you're current call off the form 605. That's how I'd tell any one who brought it up to me. Also opt to keep your call on the 605.

Being a VE I was told by one of our team members who works for the FCC. That you never upgrade until your vanity has been approved. Or never apply for a vanity until after you upgraded. Because it screws up the FCC system. If you have a call you are suppose to put it on the 605 form. The vanity call takes 3 weeks to get.

That is what I did. After I passed my Extra, I then applied for my Vanity a few weeks later. My father, who upgraded to General the same night, also got his Vanity the same time I did. He took his Extra a few months later.
