Has anyone pulled apart either a Vantage Pro2 console on Envoy replace the antenna? I'm working on a deployment of several APRS WX stations and need to put the console on an external antenna due to attenuation of the enclosure. The external antenna is a Laird 900MHz Phantom mounted to the top of the enclosure. The mock-up I am working with for the prototype is an original Vantage Pro console so I am unsure if there are any differences with the Pro2 or Envoy. I am looking to replace the antenna mounted on the console/envoy with an SMA connector.

While I haven't gone and installed an external on my Vantage Pro2 as I'm getting good reception of my "instrumentation pack" which is about 100yds away I have taken and looked inside my "backup" console. If one is fairly careful and can find a *GOOD*/*QUALITY* connector that fits one shouldn't have any problems mounting it. (IE: Find a connector that *closely* / *snugly* fits the existing opening, without taking up any more space than necessary inside the case along with any necessary suitable washers, if needed.) Carefully tighten things up and, whether or not the threads are inside or outside the case, take and put a small drop of clear fingernail polish on the threads. You'll also probably have to locate a suitable ground point inside the console as the existing antenna doesn't have a ground connection of it's own due to how close it is to the board and it's connection. I'd rather have the ground inside the console than depend upon just having a ground supplied by the enclosure and antenna though it is your `call'. I'd also probably put a *quality* `Lightening Arrestor' / `Spark Gap' between the antenna and console and make certain it's got a *really good* ground. (While *I* haven't had any lightening problems myself, and have a good `arrestor' inline on all my external antennas I know a few others who haven't bothered with them and have lost various assorted equipment. Several of them weren't even in the immediate area of the storm that `did the deed'. All it takes is is enough of a `buildup' of a charge and it'll take the `easy way' out which is usually through the most expensive thing hooked up to the antenna if there isn't an arrestor inline. {WAN GRIN!))
