With the snow season upon us, what are VDOT snow plows using nowadays? I never hear anything on STARS, but maybe I'm missing out? I am in the Salem district. I've also tried the conventional/analog frequencies in the database.

Last year I still heard them on low band. See the database for frequencies.

A lot of the plows are also contracted. I don't think they operate on the VDOT channels.

Thanks, I will keep looking for radio traffic on low band.

Likewise I added these a couple weeks ago and have not heard a peep.

This is very interesting. All the time I spend on Rt 220, I-81, Rt 460, and Rt 11, I constantly see VDOT vehicles with low band antennas. Likewise I do not hear any communications. Monitor STARS as well and pick up the VDOT Safety Service Patrol out of Salem. I can understand the lack of radio traffic last year because of the low snow fall. Matter of fact Most of STARS seems a lot more quiet lately, maybe it is just my experience or I am out of range because of the mountains. Will keep on scanning to see if there will be more traffic closer to the holidays.

Yep, VDOT has been missing from scanners in the Fredericksburg area for a few years. I had checked with the spokesperson for the local VDOT district and she confirmed they no longer use two way radios on a regular basis anymore. I believe she said they were only a backup now. Not surprising that the same alternative technology has spread elsewhere in the state.

I imagine this works particularly well in more populated parts of the state. But I hope they continue to have the low band in more remote parts. It's not only a safety issue for employees but also provides helpful information to the public.

I dont actively listen, but the trucks have recently been updated with new repeaters and radio technology. The old freqs are still in use, so the likelyhood of hearing transmissions is good unless big E

Hi all! Anyone know what frequencies VDOT uses for their mobile trucks? Been trying for hours to figure it out but there are too many channels and not enough time to listen to each one for activity. I live in the Fairfax, VA area and was looking at Fairfax County, Virginia (VA) FCC Licenses with the search term "Virginia Department of Transportation". I also found this video

I am using a RTL-SDR v4 with SDR Trunk and AirSpy.

That’s one my old videos from 2020, VDOT here in my area uses low band for snow removal. Haven’t heard them yet this year .
