Yeeeesh, the senator DID get fed some half-truth when he was briefed. The full boat STARS set-up in a LAW ENFORCEMENT unit was quoted to us in training as costing 20-large, but that includes the MDT, DVRS with XTS5000 portable, and SIRS radio- NONE of which would go into a VDOTmobile. Cutting out the aformentioned items would bring the cost per unit down to a more manageable sum. Anyone have any idea how much a Motorola XTL5000 costs installed? That would be the only item needed, I would seriously imagine...

I remember an expression about going off half-cocked from the old days, another case of a politician going off before having all the facts.

I would think VSP wouldn't want VDOT radios to be on their talk groups at all! For that matter, give me a radio too, I spend a lot of time on the road and have called VSP many times on the 800 number.

And how in the heck did the person writing that article jump from radios to snow removal in one paragraph!? Yeah, lets scare people by saying VDOT is wasting money on radios but can't plow Page County! SHEEESH!

NCDOT only has the VIPER radios in the MAP (Motorist Assistance Patrol) vehicles. MAP vehicles take care of small problems such as debris on the Interstate, stranded vehicles, etc and the NCSHP sends them rather than a Patrolman. MAPs also assist with traffic control at crash scenes and cleanup. All other NCDOT is on the 45/47MHz Part 90 Highway frequencies.
