Just an update Vernon fire and ambulance is now on 33.48. The switch was made on July 1st. Currently the Fox Hill cross band repeater low band side is set to 33.48 and still repeats on 460.3875. There is also a 33.48 lowband radio at the TN Bald Hill site on 33.48 with a PL of 179.9. This is the first step in a county wide change to multiple low band freuqencies.

If all goes well with the Vernon change going forward TN will add aditional low band frequencies. TN has obtained permission to use 33.84 and 33.86 from Enfield and Bloomfield repesctively since they are currently using new UHF systems. TN will start to implement the latter frequencies through the end of the year. The plan is for Somers FD, West Stafford FD, Stafford Ambulance, Staffordville FD, Union FD and Ashford FD to move to 33.84. Ellington FD, Ellignton Ambulance, Crystal Lake FD, Tolland FD, Willington #1 FD, and Willington Hill FD to move to 33.86. Mansfield, North Coventry, South Coventry, Columbia and Andover will stay on 33.44 and Bolton Fire will move to 33.44 as well. 33.78, 33.88 and 33.90 will also be retained as alternate backup frequencies.

In addition as part of this plan TN FDs have been urged to start utlizing low power fire ground channels for fire ground traffic and keep the high powered repeaters only for communications back to the dispatch center.

This is going to mean that you will hear less traffic spread out across more channels. This should help improve comms for the calls but will certainly limit the scanners out there and what they hear.

You, sir, are the reason RR stays so good.

Just a couple questions...

#1 So Vernon is the only one on 33.48?

#2 Will 154.74 be changing to repeat 33.86 (for Tolland) or stay on 33.44 (for Coventry)?

Yes Vernon Fire and Ambulance are the only ones operating on 33.48. The reason for this is becuase they run over 4000 call per year. When you look at each of the other three frequencies and how they are divided up, the totla of all the agencies would average about 4500 calls per year. This division seemed to make the most sense from a geographic standpoint and from call volume. Only time will tell how it works out.

Right now the plan is for Tolland Fire to go to 33.86. Nothing is final yet but since the 154.740 radio and license is the property of Tolland Fire it would go to 33.86. This would mean all you would hear is Tolland FD, Willington #1 FD, Willington Hill FD, Crystal Lake FD, Ellington FD, and Ellington Ambulance.

Each site the currently repeats 33.44 on a UHF or VHF (Tolland Fire had 154.7400) will pretty much remain on the low band that it is swithced to.

For instance.

460.3875 Vernon Fox Hill 33.44 is now 33.48
452.225 Somers Soapstone 33.44 will be 33.84
453.4375 Somers Johnson MH 33.44 will be 33.84
453.1875 Ellington Fire 33.44 could become 33.86
453.1375 TN 33.44 could become 33.86
460.025 (154.7400) Tolland Fire 33.44 could become 33.86
460.3875 Ashford Pumkin Hill 33.78 will become 33.84 (Look for UHF freq to change 463.375)
453.2125 Coventry 33.44 will Stay 33.44
453.9125 Mansfield 33.44 will Stay 33.44 (Look for the UHF freq to change 464.475)
453.8875 Columbia 33.44 will stay 33.44
453.9375 Lebanon Gate Hill 33.44 will Stay 33.44

FYI 453.6125 does not repeat 33.44 rather 33.90. This is Colchester dispatch centers cross band repeater at Birch Mountain in Glastonbury.

I believe this is all of the 33.44 cross band repeaters that repeat on UHF. Staffordville does have a VHF similar to Tolland Fire 154.7400 but it does not cover nearly as well and I do not have the frequency right now. The new Tolland Fire site at the WFSB tower is unbelievable. Hope this clears things up. Things are still only in the planning phase as they are evaluating the effectiveness of Vernon fire being on 33.48. I will keep everyone updated as I find out more.

question on freqs

Hey Mark,

So The freqs 453 and 460's wont be active anymore or will they repeat 33.84 and 33.86? or it will just be the low band 33.44 , 33.84 and 33.86?

Becuase most of the cross band repeaters are owned by individual fire departments or towns instead of TN I cannot be 100% sure what will happen. My guess is the repeaters will stay active and the 453 and 460 repeaters will still repeat it just will not be 33.44 in all cases. It will be the new lowband frequencies. It sounds like 33.84 will be next but the time table is not certain.

As far as implementation, there are many things that need to happen before the change can occur. One decision is the PL tone. Standard covention is for everyone east of the river operating on low band to use 179.9. The problem is that the Pequots use 33.84 on 179.9 and there could be some co-channel usage. TN is trying to decide if they should stay with 179.9 or go with something new and break the covention. All the departments who are switching need to have their radios as well as their mutual aid departments radios programmed to use 33.84. In addition TN has to build some infrastructure.

I will keep everyone updated on the changes as they occur.
