• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hello Everyone,

I have a number of Vertex EVX-531 Radio's and a few Motorola VX-261 Radio's that I am trying to find the correct cable and programming software to purchase.

I have come across a fair bit of different data regarding what to buy. I've found these two options on ebay...

I am wondering if one of these will work for me or if someone can please point me in the right direction.

Thank you to all who took the time to read this and any help is greatly appreciated.

The "Right" cable according to Vertex/Motorola is the FIF-12 interface box/cable. Those run about $150. They will program all versions of EVX and VX portable and mobile radios (with the proper connecting cable from the interface box). They will also allow you to do firmware upgrades and wideband recovery if you're into that kind of stuff.

If you're mainly interested in just doing simple programming on the two models of radios that you mentioned, a generic USB cable similar to what you pictured in the 2nd listing will work just fine. You may need to go into the "configuration" tab of the software and toggle around the baud rate to find what will work best with your particular radio/software/hardware combination, but you'll save @ $120.

Thank you for replying RadioGuy7268. I don't need to do anything to fancy I just need to program the FCC frequencies we have for work so I can put the radio's into service.
