The band 30-88 MHz is used by the military, primarily Army, for ground and air tactical training communications throughout CONUS using a wide variety of tactical FM radios. Bands within 30-88, such as civilian land mobile bands between 30-50, the Amateur Band 50-54 and TV Channels 2 through 6 (54-60; 60-66; 66-72; 76-82; 82-88) are used on a noninterference basis to civilian licensees following coordination with FCC district offices. If you're around an installation with tactical units, e.g., Forts, Hood, Bragg, Sill, Polk, Irwin, et al, you'll hear ground, air-air, and air-ground communications in portions of the 30-88 band, with especially heavy traffic during training exercises. At some forts, FM freqs are permanently assigned to air traffic control facilities for occasional communications with tactical aircraft.

I have no idea what scanners are available that cover 30-88, but that info should be easy enough to find out.

Always make sure the radio has a way to switch modes. Some radios may cover the 138-144 and 148-150 milair bands but only in FM.

If it covers 225-400 and the 138-144 and 148-150 milair bands chances are it will also cover the lowband stuff. I use to hear lowband skip in the 30-54 range that was really exciting stuff. Tanks, bradleys and other ground type units doing training. Fascinating listening that I never got to hear much. You would hear them calling out kills and you could hear the rumble of diesels in the HUMVEES and the whine of the turbines in the tanks and bradleys. Came from Ft. Sill I think.

All these answers naturally lead to 'what kind of radio do I need'? We now have a nice Milair Wiki that addresses that question in detail. Receivers, scanners, a few antennas, pages, ect. - more than enough to get you started.

Depends on what you need, base or mobile, new or used. My personal recommendations:
New Handheld: BR330T <- Around $260 New
Used Handeld: BC250D <- Around $200 Used
New Base: No personal recommendation
Used Base: BC785D <- Around 200 used

All of these I own and I have been VERY satisfied with as far as the milair coverage goes.
If you can swing it, go for the BR330T. It covers everything. I really like it!
