Very new to the scanner world - WS1040

Got a new WS1040 and have been trying to manually program 1 channel at a time - this is not working very well at all. I don't know how much I understand programming it using the computer but most of the reviews seem to say that's the best way. I'm in Asheville N.C. Buncombe county. Any help will be greatly apricated.
