vhf whip

Hi guys, I recently got a 3 foot tunable vhf antenna for a magnet mount. Problem is, 1 end is bigger than the other, just a millimeter or so. My question is-- can I drill out the hole where the whip goes into? New Tram Stainless Steel Spring Antennas Motorola Icom Kenwood UHF VHF Low Band | eBay Mine isnt stainless. Thanks, Ron

The whips are tapered by design. Why do you want to drill it out, will it not fit properly?

You would need to be cautious drilling the base. On the springs, there is often a length of flexible braid that connects the top part to the bottom, bypassing the spring to prevent noise as it flexes. Damaging that braid will cause issues. If you are talking about drilling the base coil, again, there is a chance of damaging the coil on the inside.
