Vietnam Memorial Flight To Visit Gastonia Municipal Airport

Three restored Vietnam veteran helicopters will stop at the Gastonia Municipal Airport from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 27, as part of a memorial flight honoring Vietnam veterans.

The memorial flight is a 5,000-mile, round-trip flight from California to Washington, D.C., traveling through 16 states and 43 cities in 25 days. The refurbished helicopters are owned by Wings and Rotors Air Museum in Murrieta, Calif., and on their return trip from the May 25th ceremony at the Vietnam Wall Memorial.

"We will be on the ground for at least two hours to re-fuel, find some lunch and allow your local veterans a chance to come out and see these historic helicopters, " said Shayne Meder, marketing director of Wings and Rotors Air Museum in California. "We are a 501 C-3 non-profit organization and this trip is funded by corporate and private sponsors. We occasionally intercept with the Rolling Thunder, the annual Ride to the Wall parade of motorcycles. In the 20-year history of this event Huey helicopters have never flown the entire trip before. Our 25 day round trip will be highly publicized and we will have on board a film crew making a documentary. "

Local veterans and the general public are invited to come out and see the helicopters and possibly be interviewed for the documentary. For more information about the museum and the historic flight you may call Ms. Meder at 951-662-5653 or go online to www.flyingthunder.org
