• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

EFJ will be releasing the VM8000 at IWCE next week, does anybody have any details on if it will be multi-band single deck, or will it be the the same as the VM7000, just supporting multi-protocol?

It looks "big". Anyone find any paperwork with specs? The only hits I'm getting out of the show are pictures tied to articles in Japanese. :(

No worse than the APX8500, Per the flyer from IWCE 6.99"W x 189"H x 10.81"D in., 7.5 lbs, VHF 50W, UHF 45W, 7/800 35W

The guys from EFJ said should be available before the end of this year, I'm sure more info to follow after the JVC/EFJ roadshow.

Pretty much as expected (in a good way), but I was hoping (but not expecting) a 100w option on VHF.

I agree, one of them is almost certainly for GPS. The second SMA is what I'm wondering about.

Probably WiFi, especially if we could get a good look and see if it's RP.

WiFi is listed in Evans spec sheet above, so we know it has that. Since the radios often get stuffed in the back, relying on WiFi antenna on the RF deck probably isn't a good idea. The control head looks similar to the NX-5000 line, so running Ethernet up to the head is unlikely.

A WiFi antenna jack where it could be wired into a good external antenna would probably make a lot of sense.

Kenwood/EFJ has made it pretty clear they are not adding LTE to these, unless it's a future expansion port. They seem to like the Tait Axiom approach, or the BKR9000 approach of using an external LTE radio to connect via WiFi.

Time will tell. Some interesting specs if you zoom in on those photos.

Single antenna connector appears to be an N type? At least it's not that QMA garbage on the 8500. Can't wait. The VP8K is a killer radio. Love mine.
While I enjoy the Viking radios...until they have something on par with Motorola's SmartConnect it's pretty much a moot point for my guys (then the real struggle begins with getting the core owners to integrate a non-Motorola feature especially since EFJ will likely interface it through ISSI which adds on more cost). That being said...being a former EFJ employee I've known about this product for the last two years now...and my local rep already knows I plan on obtaining one for my county truck to sit right next to the APX8500. Would love to get one for my POV but at that point the radio would be worth more than that beat up GMC is worth so I guess I'll just have to stick to VM900/5300 combo I have.
How many of those connectors are going to be replaced because the useless radio shops try using a PL259 on them...
If you are a pre-JVCK acquisition EFJ shop...none because that's what EFJ used on those. Remember...Viking radios are EFJ and the VP8000 and VM8000 are products exclusive to EFJ and do not have Kenwood contemporaries.
EFJ said they were working on some sort of a solution for LTE and WIFI for the VP8000, although it would be a device that was paired with the radio like the tait axiom device.
So it'll be rebranded Axiom. JVCK owns some non-controlling portion of Tait and the rumor is JVCK funded the RSM Axiom development specifically for the VP8000. If you ever get a chance to check out the Tait...I mean Kenwood Tier 2.5 DMR repeaters...you'll find they were strangely made in New Zealand upon further inspection.

Motorola didn't have a high power variant of the APX8500 out initially either. Also keep in mind, the APX8000 was announced roughly 18-24 months before the APX8500 was announced...just like what we've now seen with the VP8000 and VM8000.

Wellsir, that's because you are a pimp.

As for all these folks that have to have LTE in their radios, well, why? Do you have drastic coverage deficiencies? Careful throwing that LTE stuff around, before you know it, we'll all be unemployed. Want to listen to the radio system at home, out of coverage? MOVE.
