If a person were to go to http://www.okcfriday.com, they could read an interesting article about the Village and Nichols Hills Fire departments getting a grant for a new radio system. As the article was written, It sounded to me like they chose to go with the state Motorola system, instead of the new OKC system, and partially so they could get away from evil scannerists...
PS the other article on their "Front page" concerns Guy Liebmann being sworn in as a state legislator. Guy is ham. His call sign is K5GL.

Next to a scanner...
It says it will help their coms drastically - I don't really know about that. The repeater they use now is very near their locations (http://www.radioreference.com/modules.php?name=RR&action=fcc&cs=KNGE612) in Nichols Hills (NW corner of 63rd and Western), and the nearest state site is the OKC site (SE of 36th & N MLK). This state site is only 4 miles away from the original site, but proximity matters. Height also matters though. The state antenna is 125m (412.5 ft) to the tip (from ground), and the Nichols Hills antenna is only 18m (~60 ft). The state system is licensed for usage 56 km around the OKC site, and the Nichols Hills antenna is only rated for 40 km. I know NH/Village are not that big, but think about the FD - when they are in some building or basement or something like that. 800 might make it out better, but trunked systems don't work well when TXing underground. On another trunked system that I used to listen to, the police would follow someone into some tunnels, and they would have to switch to conventional backup, even though the site was less than 1 mile away (at ~700 ft).

"Drastically improving" could be an opinion - what is yours?

Sweet. As i understand, there are talks about merging the two dispatch centers into one center. (Village and Nichols Hills) They already respond to everything together, it would make sense to have one dispatch center. :)
