• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Somewhere around 1973 I bought a used Hy-Gain Penetrator for about $50, and that was a lot of money for a high school kid back then. I had that in the air at several residences until the late 1990s when I took it down and it was in pretty bad shape. In the last 5yrs or so I bought a new version that cost $150 shipped and its identical in size and shape but the metal tubing is just a bit thinner. Its still double wall for the first section but it waves around in the wind a little more than the original. Tuning, bandwidth and SWR are the same and I would say performance is identical.

A refurbished vintage Hy-Gain Penetrator is at least $400 and why would you buy that when you can have 98% of the same antenna brand new under the same name brand for $150 and its not a made in Italy copy?

Otherwise there are occasional deals on Ebay for vintage antennas being sold by original owners and not "antenna flippers" trying to make huge profit. Within a few month period I bought two new in box Shakespeare fiberglass Yagi's, a 3-element and a 4-element from two different sellers. One cost me about $40 plus shipping and I can't remember what the other cost but I would have not bid much more than $50. These are among the rarest CB antennas in existence as I heard about them in the late 70s, worked in the business in the mid 70s to early 80s and have never seen one in person in my life until these two showed up on Ebay.

I've also picked up a new in box vintage Radio Shack 19ft 10in 5/8 ground plane with the three 9ft radials on Ebay for about $30. Then a new in box vintage Shakespeare 3-piece Big Stick for about $40. The stuff is out there if you look every day and sometimes it goes for very reasonable prices.

I don't know, I never saw a 1970's muscle car built in Japan. Remember when we use to make are own steel in this
country. When I worked for this steel company in the 70's, we wouldn't let the salesmen who who came to our company
driving cars from Japan park in our lot. They had to park out in the street.
Well I was referring to CBs as that was the topic here.
