Very nice. I still have some older crystal scanners myself. All still work, and it is nice to show people how they used to be built and function.

Great history lesson for the younger crowd. Thank you for sharing.

I see the box from the RCA 16S400 scanner (circa mid 1970s) in the upper left of your first picture. I currently have that scanner in use today and IMHO consider it to be one of the best crystal scanners ever made. It has 10 channels, excellent loud audio from a large side-facing speaker, excellent sensitivity, a fast 20-channels-per-second scan speed and covers 4 bands (VHF-Low, VHF-High, UHF and UHF-T).

The same radio chassis was also used on the Channel Master CS6794. The Channel Master model lacked the variable 0-4 seconds scan delay that the RCA model had. Both radios were made in Japan for RCA and Channel Master.

I was a Regency guy through the 70s in my first foray into scanning but I recognize most of those scanners. I went with Regency in the late 80s to return to scanning but shifted to RS and Uniden when trunking came to my location. It still adds up to a fair collection as I still have every scanner I ever bought.

Thanks for the great photos - love a trip down memory lane!

I heard that the Plectron scanner had great sensitivity. How does it compare to the other scanners shown or even some of the newer programmables ?

The RCA scan-aire was a great scanner. The audio fidelity was excellent. They also made a 4 channel portable version. I still have my scan-aire base in like new condition and it works great.

Is Your Analog Scanner Really Obsolete? "Is Your Analog Scanner Really Obsolete?" This article is from '06, but it has great ideas for what to use the older scanners for now. I refer to it every once in a while whenever I am cleaning up "the shack" and wonder why I am still holding on to my thrift store finds lol. Good for you on your oldies and I love that you still have the box on the RCA "Scan-Aire" or if you bought it used like that.
