I can't find it on their website, but they were talking how the troopers can't talk to their dispatchers with the handheld radios. One of the HTs looked pretty old school with the BNC plug :lol: I wonder where he hid his 800 HT during the story?

Intresting story anyway. I think the trooper was H350.

Most of the HT's I have seen are SMA type... And definately the Motorola's that would be used on the NC State System would not have BNC.... LOL

Maybe he was playing with an old scanner, or CB, and pretending it was an HT????

It was a old VHF HT for his vechicular repeater. That's what the story was about, then the "push" for Viper.

I also saw what looked like a plain front Motorola Jedi series. I don't know of any Public Safety Jedis like that except the HT1000. I'll watch the noon news to see if they replay the story.

Now if it were me, I'd put a 17" pvc covered whip on the HT and replace my ASP with it :twisted:

The old portable radio with the BNC (Bayonet Neville Connector) is a Tait portable. The unit fits into a charger assembly that is linked to a trunk-mounted 25 watt VHF high band Tait mobile transceiver attached to a low band Motorola Syntor 9000E. The Tait mobile functions as a 7 channel mobile unit when the portable is in the charger, and functions as a crossband repeater when the portable is removed. There are several hundred of these still in service with the troopers, and no, the troopers don't like 'em any better than the radio service personnel do.

The Tait portables were actually built for Tait by another manufacturer (possibly Repco) and some even carry the Pace logo as well as some other brand names.

If state-issue, the Jedi series is either an HT1000 that is tied to a newer Vertex VXR-1000 crossband repeater unit that's interfaced with either a Syntor low band or a Maratrac low band, or it's possibly one of the 800 mHz versions of the Jedi series that belongs to a local department on the 800 system. There are several Jedi 800 versions out there, all analog, BTW.

Motorola, as well as all the other radio manufacturers, has built some real dogs from time-to-time over the years, but in my experience as a technician/engineer for over 35 years, Tait radios, whether old or new, are royal pieces of excrement.

I might be wrong on this, but I'm thinking the handhelds used with the mobile extenders, which were made by Tait, were also Tait radios.

Some DMV officers used to have 42-MHz handhelds, programmed just like the car radios, for use when they were out of their vehicles. They were handy for monitoring the DMV channel and the local NCHP channel, but not very good for talking back to dispatch. I'd see these radios occasionally when DMV stepped up its patrol of the interstate rest areas a few years ago, or when they were talking a break at the NC Welcome Center on I-77 in Charlotte. For some reason, I'm thinking they were Icoms.

The portables weren't made in New Zealand (Tait), they're all carrying US and Malaysian id's and are Repco pieces. The huge majority have the Tait brand on the front covers and ID tags, but there are some that have a different color (gray, black, and brown) case and carry other brand names like Pace, Icom, etc. Parts for 'em have become made of unobtainium, and I would know, I have to work on the lousy things. :lol:

The low banders you saw were either Icom or Vertex units (there were both out there) as well as some Bendix units.

I'm sure it was a Jedi series, I carry a MTX9000 at work. I think the plain front is referred to as the B3? I wish they would put the story on their website like many other stations do

Yepper the old Jedi's with the UGLY front was that thar B3 critter.... I would expect to see XTS's on them belts when the system is fully grown.

In some areas the 800 radios you see the troopers carrying belong to the local system while in other areas the radios belong to the state and have the local system in them. You'll see XTS5000s on the belts as the system builds out. The 3000s will be phased out as the 5000s come in, and once there are sufficient quantities for all that don't have an 800 radio, those carrying the 3000s will turn them in for the 5000s.

Anyone happen to have a list (that they can publish) of the troopers ID # breakdown? IE:: B-648 was assigned to Brunswick Co. I know the letter is the troop, but is there any way to decipher the prefix to a certain county?

Grog - and others,

I've attached a text file here that includes district information.

Before this morning, I last played with this file in 1999, when I was traveling around the state more than I do now. So, some of the information might be dated, but I don't think the district configuration has changed much (splitting Dare and Currituck Counties into A-9 was the last change I remember).

The file contains other notes / information I was compiling for my own use regarding remote sites, comm center setups, equipment, etc. Six GHz microwave has replaced some of the remote links as the primary pathway, but hobbyists will find some of those links still in place for secondary pathways.

I did add a couple of "ed" notes in parentheses where I know a comment has changed.

Again, this is 1999 information, but I'd be glad to add updates from anyone that wants to contribute.

One correction to my notes ... the console configuration under Troop C was actually for Troop B / E-Town. I've gotten the 50-cent tours at Williamston, E-Town, Newton, Salisbury and Monroe, but (unfortunately) never Raleigh.

Prior to 09/11/2001, people involved in and / or using public safety communications tended to be a litte more open about their systems, if they understood a person's interest in the hobby of listening to them.

I've been very fortunate to meet alot of folks who talked about their jobs and the radio equipment they use. In particular, I was blessed to meet and learn alot from Bob, Steve and Jim, who once made up the crew at the NCHP Newton radio shop. Bob passed away several years ago from a brain tumor - one of the hazards that I think is closely related to that field of work. Steve took Bob's place, after a stint as supervisor at Monroe. And Jim was still there when I last visited (for a blood drive, sponsored by the NCHP).

Credit also goes to the many "insiders" who also pursue some aspect of monitoring as a hobby, but prefer to remain anonymous. Those folks sometimes e-mail with additional comments and / or corrections to something I've posted, and their insight is ALWAYS appreciated.

WBTV showed part of last years story, with more interviews with a Meck Trooper. They were pushing the VIPER story, and stating how the state needs $100 million more to finish it.

Just a note to anyone using Rowan County's new 911 home page: there are a few errors in the frequency and talk group listings. I have emailed the "webmaster" on several occasions with the changes that need to be made, and he has yet to respond back to me or make any changes.
