Alexander doesn't use VIPER at all as far as I know. I've heard EMS calling in to CVMC and FRMC on VIPER but I think they're handheld. Otherwise, everything is VHF

I was checking F.C.C. files for something related to Asheville, I happened to click on a file for a Murphy site. It is WQTH627-Payne Mountain off of Hideaway Mountain Drive, Murphy. That is too distant for me to check, so I can't verify if it is up, down, or sideways...I do remember that Metro31 is near Franklin (city). He might know, I couldn't locate the site in the database, can't help anymore than that.
On the google map, there is a bright, new, shiny transmitter there. Also, I swear it looks like a marked N.C.S.P. vehicle parked at the site, ha

Just heard my first encrypted transmission today. 52336. It's in database listed as SHP Microwave Techs.

I posted the ID ranges on my list. I don't think Anson is utilizing VIPER. Richmond is. If your scanner is in ID Scan mode, you should switch to ID Search mode.

If you're using a Uniden 396/996 switching to ID Search from ID Scan is as easy as pressing the Scan button. To switch back, press the Scan button again.

I am using a 436 and still trying to figure it out. I am new to this aspect of scanning and was hoping to just rely on updates on sentinel. Thanks for the help. BTW is there any tutorials or help available for sentinel? The version I downloaded from the scanner doesn't have a help feature.

AlphaFive, this sounds very familiar to a site in my neighboring county. Phillips Knob in Yancey County. WQNQ261. FCC gives it Site Status S. Then on another page it says Site Status is Active, Auth type Special Temporary, with an expiration date on 9/14/2014. It's been in the database forever and the tower has never shown life. So who knows?

If anyone else on here are "in the know" about what is going on with the Phillips Knob/Burnsville/Yancey tower, such as if it's ever gonna happen or if the whole plans of a Phillips Knob tower has been thrown away, please let me know!

Ref wqnq261,, interesting. On my own homemade lists, I don't show any hits on the tower, for the new P 25, or even on the old system. I do get the sites near there from Clingmans peak to the Spruce Pine area. Your right, it's asleep right now

N.C.S.P. does have another active site listed from that location, it's WPRJ404, but that shows to be used for the m.d.t.'s...That is the only hit I have ever received from Burnsville

Some other RR.com folks have made tutorials that are available on Youtube:

Apparently the State believes it will be active at some point seeing as they have
assigned Site number 2-68 as part of the P25 upgrade.

Phillips Knob has been ever since I got my scanner and started preparing to monitor the VIPER system nearly two years ago.

Based on what I heard, it come down to politics, more or less. The land owners wouldn't let them build a site. They tried to colo on US Cellular's monster tower, that was shot down.

So as far as I know the tower has never been built. Or building has been started.

I do know Yancey County got the DHS grant (like many other counties) specifically to go towards the construction of the site. The money was then passed to the SHP. However, the deadline was some time late last year. So I wonder how that worked out. I am sure that the SHP had to pay the money back to DHS since they didn't build the site by the deadline.

But I don't know. I am curious if anyone else "in the know" has any real facts about the progress of the site. It would be a vital asset to Yancey County. As it stands, from the top of "Hilltop" in Burnsville east to the Mitchell/Yancey line, radios pretty much have a line of sight with Woodys Knob. If you go north from Burnsville to Green Mountain then units have to depend on Locust Knob in Mitchell County. From Micaville south to the McDowell/Yancey line (South Toe) it's line of sight (or NLoS) to Clingman's Peak. And it's also relatively close to that community so units can use handhelds with no issues. However, from Hilltop in Yancey to the Madison line, there is no line of sight to Woodys Knob, Locust Knob, Clingman's Peak, or the towers in Madison County. VIPER is pretty much dead from Hilltop west in Yancey County.

What a lot people don't realize is that most the law enforcement vehicles have VIPER radios, and they also have portables. They rarely use them. But they want to use them because "scanners can't pick them up" (yes I heard one of the LEO say that when they were testing them out) and because they work so well in South Toe, an area that they don't get good reception with their VHF radios.

I live in Central Mitchell County. Right between Woodys and Locust. I get 5 bars signal off Woodys. Maybe two off the Locust site. Until I receive a transmission. The transmissions usually come in 4 to 5 bars.

There are dead spots in Mitchell as well. Primarily on then northwest end of the county. Pigeon Roost and Poplar are complete dead zones and the county shut down the VHF Law repeaters. So LEO units either have to wait till they get back in coverage area, or use VHF Fire. It is possible that building the Phillips Knob site could help fill in some of the dead spots in Mitchell County.

Alpha5 yes the MDT's have been in operation for several years now. I have a friend that is a Burnsville officer and he has a MDT in his cruiser. And it works really well. I can't vouch for the Sheriff's Department, though.

51826 STOC (Statewide Traffic Operations Center) picking up in the Triangle area.

52342 UNC Flightwatch.

51826 was already in the database under DOT TGs.
Added 52342 to the Statewide Medical Transport group.
Thanks!

Marshall, this is great news! Every time I go to Burnsville I sweep the band to see if I can hit any new control channels.

I'll be looking forward to them putting the new tower up in Burnsville, just as much as the people that will be using it.

The VHF radio system they have now on Phillips Knob is built on an array of light poles. Despite I can pick Phillips Knob up great here where I live. I can't pick up Locust Knob VHF at all even though I can get 800 off Locust Knob. Mitchell has their VHF fire repeaters in simulcast with a voter. And they also have it patched into VIPER fire talkgroup. Which is how I monitor fire. Yancey has 3 law repeaters, 5 fire repeaters. None of them are tied together with simulcast. Just different PL tones. You can imagine how aggravating it is when they have to dispatch county-wide announcements or page multi agencies for an emergency.
