Got news today that a timeline had been laid out for the switch to Phase 2.
Looks to be a 5 year plan with phasing out incompatible radios and then actually starting system changes January 1st 2025.

Yes, starting in January (2020) they will no longer be issuing Radio ID's for Phase-1 type radios (XTS series, XTL series, EF Johnson's, etc..) and by 2025 those said radios will no longer work on the system.

No it's not Mother M, they do need the Phase-2 technology. The system has gotten so busy & with so many users now that they need the expanded bandwidth of the 2-slot system for each frequency so 2 people can be on the same frequency instead of just 1. It will expand the usage greatly and take care of most of the "bonks" from busy tower sites due to over-usage. It's a blessing & a curse because the technology is nice and stuff but it causes small volunteer Depts like mine to have to buy $6000 radios each person plus the mobiles for all our trucks & Officers. they do have grants for Depts like mine to get assistance for Comms equipment but they're very difficult to get approved for...
