I have submitted the following changes for the Waxhaw AAA site (01FCh-0288) in Union County which is south of Charlotte near the SC border:

Two additional frequencies have been added with this new license:

Possible New Greenville PD Talkgroup

I have seen a new TG pop up on the Greenville tower lately. TGID 37567 which is in the range of Greenville PD. Looks like all encrypted traffic. I haven't seen the RID's on any other TG's yet.

Has anyone heard about Iredell County moving to full VIPER? I know that EMS has already done it.

I'm looking for the 5th site in Gaston County. On the site map it's in the southwestern part of the county, south of Gastonia. No listing in the DB that I can find. Other sites in Gaston are: 208, 221, 230 & 281.

Sadly, under it's current leadership, Rowan County has no plans in even simulcasting on VIPER. I've personally spoken with a few folks in EM and at the communications center and they show no interest in doing so.

Rowan has it's own stand alone P25 system with several tower sites situated through the county. I will say first hand that the system does a great job with 99% coverage in and surrounding our county.

After a recent visit to the communications center, I've found that there is a separate console for VIPER and the only TG in it is Statewide Calling. If a telecommunicator needs to switch to another VIPER TG such as L/Z Central, they use a portable radio that rests in it's charging cradle on the shift supervisor's desk.

The VIPER TG's listed here in the database are the only active TG's I've ever heard our radio maintenance do testing on. I have been told that these TG's will only be activated for simulcast if or when a large scale response of out-of-county agencies is requested.

Found two unidentified TGs in the McDowell County range this past weekend:

28513-Most likely Marion PD
28507-McDowell SO or Marion PD TAC?

VIPER Signal Strength

I live in Morrisville near the intersection of Chapel Hill Road and Weston Parkway. I am unable to get any signal from any of the Wake County VIPER sites. According to the tower maps, I should be getting a strong signal from a couple of the sites. Wake Simulcast signal is very strong.

Strangely, I can receive a fair signal from the VIPER Durham Brian Center site.

I am using a discone antenna mounted in my attic.

Any thoughts or comments welcome.

From the VIPER Durham Brian Center site, I mainly hear SHP, EMS to Hospital traffic, Duke and UNC.

What is the angle of your roof? The roof could be eating the signal but your house could be pointed the right direction to pick that site up. You are just about in the middle of the sites. I personally have troubles with my discone on 800 MHZ.

Drayd48, thanks for your reply. Didn't consider roof angle. I do believe my house is about 30 degrees out of line with the transmitter. Given that most of our scanning is now done in the 800MHz range, what would be the best antenna?

I use a Radio Shack 800 MHZ antenna. It is the black one with "800MHZ" written on the side of it. I live in a hole with a metal roof (deflects 800 signal) and that and my Motorola 800 antenna is the only thing that I have gotten to work. You may want to try putting the discone outside your roof and mounted. I have not really had any luck with an external antenna even tunes to 800 MHZ. If someone else could recommend a 800 antenna that would be great also.

dray448 and reconrider8, thank you for responding. My neighborhood prohibits external antennas, so attic or something covert is all I can do. I will definitely investigate an 800Mhz Omni antenna. On a somewhat related topic, what are your thoughts on an antenna switch. I actually have multiple scanners and multiple antennas in the attic. Erecting an 800Mhz might suggest I consider an antenna switch.

I do have a digital TV antenna in the attic and also an indoor flat rectangular HDTV antenna. Has anyone tried to see if that flat HDTV antenna would work with a scanner?

Thanks,
