VA STARS System

The VA state police currently use frequencies in the VHF band. The main frequency in the Richmond area is 159.000. The documentation I have read on the system leads me to believe they will stay on the same frequencies they use now. Jim.

What type of system is the new digital system the state is getting? They said digital so is it 800. Heres a story on it.

My sources at VSP tell me that it'll be a digital VHF system. Remember that digital means that the voice traffic is being converted to 1's and 0's when it's transmitted, and this can be done outside of 800MHz.

Since the bid spec is on-line anyone with teh time and interest can get the whole scoop.

statewide system

Is the proposed system something we'll be able to monitor with the proper radio? Thanks!

The System is supposed to be on VHF Splinter Channels & the channels they are on now and they are to add more transmitter sites at the receive sites that they now have. However something tells me that in the mountains the digital will not work very well if they don't have the appropriate coverage, but that is just me.

N-Jay if you take time to skim over the PDF Document that you posted it will give you all the Technical Details that you need

P25 digital is proving out to cover as well as analog.
So coverage is coverage, digital should not be an issue.

As for the VA bid, I was posting the links for others who were asking.

I don't have a need to know that system right now.

VHF Splinter Channels

What are splinter channels?

Narrowband channels between existing channels.

Sounds like a interference mess in the making, considering
the current channel are already causing interference.

Not if the system is designed properly, but that is s whole new topic. :D

Interference from STARS is a major concern of Forestry as they are one of the many agencies not participating in STARS, rather STARS usurped some of Forestry's frequencies and will be moving in adjacent to some existing Forestry frequencies. STARS could actually end up hurting Forestry's communications by reducing the frequencies that they did have and muscling them off others. STARS got the previous and existing Governors to sign an executive order granting STARS authority to use frequencies belonging to any state agency that they wanted. In spite of that STARS lacks access capacity if all agencies participated, which is why 85% of non-state police state agency radios will stay on their existing systems.
