VK7AALDB is a Python-based radio logging and database application developed to make logging, organising, and managing radio scanning data practical, flexible, and genuinely useful for real-world monitoring.
Many off-the-shelf logging tools are either too generic to capture meaningful detail, or so rigid that they force users into workflows that don’t match how radio enthusiasts actually scan. VK7AALDB was created to bridge that gap, a purpose-built solution designed by a radio hobbyist, for radio hobbyists.
Whether your focus is Ultralight DXing, Shortwave Monitoring, airband, HF, Amateur Radio or general VHF / UHF Scanning, VK7AALDB allows you to log frequencies in a way that makes sense to you. Records can be categorised, searched, sorted, and revisited over time, turning casual listening into a long-term, searchable knowledge base.
The project places a strong emphasis on:
Simplicity – quick data entry without unnecessary complexity
Flexibility – adaptable fields and workflows that evolve with your interests
Longevity – your logs remain useful months or years down the track
Practical use – built around real scanning habits, not theory
VK7AALDB is especially well suited to those who enjoy low-footprint, portable, or opportunistic radio monitoring, where being able to quickly capture and later analyse what you heard is just as important as the listening itself.
This project continues to evolve alongside my own scanning and amateur radio activities, and it reflects a broader philosophy: radio should be accessible, enjoyable, and documented in a way that helps the hobby grow and remain relevant well into the future.
