Hopefully, this is the correct thread to post in. Over the years, I have not given much thought into analyzing my various antennae (DIY or purchased) but would like to start, strictly from a hobby perspective. In the past, I would just "plug and play", hoping for the best. I have tiptoed into SDR (I currently have SDR# and SDR Angel installed) but am by no means a pro. So I am reaching out for any tips/advice/recommendations on how to start. I used to have my FCC amateur radio technician license so I do have some basic knowledge.

One of the youtubers I follow, IMSAIGUY, had a video on a VNA which seemed very interesting. I also have a couple of Nooelec NESDR Smart dongles that I have not really messed with much, due to work, etc, but would like to get more familiar with. Last, I did recently purchase a cheaper RF bridge, noise source, dB attenuator and some dummy loads trying to build my own analyzer but that experiment has not gone well.

Depends on your budget.

I've got a ~$20K unit at work. Does a nice job.
I've got a ~$70 NanoVNA at home. Does a pretty good job.

For most hobbyists, something like the NanoVNA will do what you need for testing antennas.

I have all of the "old" tools (like dip meters, noise bridges, etc.) for measuring antennas, as well as professional VNAs through my job. Either a modern antenna analyzer (like a Rig Expert) or a nanoVNA is a much better choice. The only thing I don't care for on the nanoVNA (aside from the wonky wheel) is that it can be difficult to read in full daylight.

If you're going to use a NanoVNA then get one of the software apps that works with the device to display the full output and interface on your computer. MUCH simpler than trying to see and operate the tiny built-in screen on the NanoVNA. There are at least two apps out there -

- NanoVNA-App NanoVNA-AppNanoVNAhttps://nanovna.com › ...

Thank you all for the info. Santa brought me a NanoVNA-H4 :)
I just downloaded the NanoVNA Saver software so hopefully, I will have time over the next few days to get familiar with them both.
